Foundation 2

Here comes your second homework!

1. multi-wraps with handler in different positions: set a bar at your current cik&cap height and have a dog do multiple wraps around the wing. Change your position so that you're sometimes on take-off side, sometimes on landing side of the jump. Reward by reaching in with a toy to reward close to the wing. Multi-wraps should always be your first exercise when you put the bars on the next height and you should keep working on them on each height, it's great collection jumping exercise, I actually do some before every training, within our warm-up.

2. cik&cap sequencing: we'll mask this training for different handler positions and moves into a little sequence and include a tunnel for extra fun 🙂 Start with cap on one, try cik with handler on a landing side on 3, a shoulder pull from 4 to 5, cap with a front cross on 5, tunnel again and then push for another cik on 7. Reward in the direction of where I set number 8. Break it down in little parts first.

3. 2on2off vs. running: time to address contacts! Send a video of whatever you've got till now if you are already working on it. If you haven't done anything about it yet, those two videos show first step of 2on2off (at 3:13 of this video) - stopping in the position on a box/upside down drawer:

Lexus Final Tricks Video

and running (at 1:30 of this video - I hope it's fine I used your video Gitte 🙂 ) - running over a long carpet:

2011.04.25_RC_Zushi.avi

If you haven't decided yet, you can work on both, using a box or up-side-down drawer for 2on2off and a carpet or a wide, thin plank for running contacts - and then see what you like better.

Hi Silvia and classmates -- I have not introduced myself so far but have been reading and watching all of your videos and they have been so helpful. I have a 15-month old border collie (Paddy) that I am working with for this class. He is my first border collie but not my first agility dog. I also audited Silvia’s first puppy tricks class and we learned so much. I am currently auditing the class because I wasn’t sure how to video and post videos as I live alone. I have gotten some help with the technical stuff and have purchased a tripod so that I can now video my training sessions and hopefully post them. Silvia, would it be possible to upgrade at this point so that I can post videos? I surely understand if that is not possible so don’t feel bad if you have to say no Your comments are so very helpful and you help me see things I would not otherwise notice. Thanks, Anita

Sure, it’s possible. I’ve just sent you a money request for the difference.

Thank you so much. Taken care of. I now will be out of town for a week (without dogs) so training is on back burner. Congratulations on your qualifying for the World Championships with Bu and La. They are lucky dogs to have such a wonderful training partner.

Very cool! No problems with the sequence -- other than remembering it 🙂 Great independence in the channel, time to try starting her SLIGHTLY off line.

Hi Silvia, So we took a few days to get back to our same setup as before, but without the hoops. I talked my daughter into coming out to film and this is what we got. I’d love to edit it down and show you the good ones, but we didn’t have any! What I have to work with is a mini aframe with 6ft sides and a 12ft seesaw. You are seeing one mini aframe side and the seesaw in this video. I also have the old 24 ft dogwalk on the ground so that Nero runs it daily going to and fro the front and back yard. I also have lot of bits of carpet as well. I thought I had him going well across the seesaw plank with two hits and foot separation each time. In this video it is one hit and a nice fast leap. He’s getting stronger really fast right now. He’s 8 months old now…

    Help

    • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 14:44 Log in to Reply

Actually, that’s not too bad! But as you figured already, he is getting too fast and too big for 2 strides on 12ft plank. Most BCs here do two strides down ramp, BUT ours are longer, so most BCs in my RC class, running US length DW, need to do 1,5 strides on a down ramp, meaning that rear feet must hit the down ramp first (not front) -- and then they’re in with the next stride. To get this striding, mini A-frame set up is not good as it promotes flying the apex. You would need mini DW set-up (and probably lower as that) so that the apex is not so pronounced and then it’s more likely you will get correct striding. Jackpot for hind feet on a down ramp first -- see the running contacts video I posted recently, Bi is showing this kind of striding in her 4-strides DW pattern.

We are back from 16 days of vacation. First week on a doggy camp were i teached in agility. And Zushi was trained a little ind sit stays and come to hand, and cik& cap.
Last week, we participated ind the week competition Dania Cup. I was participating with my older dog Zinnia and my dads Sheltie Zissi.
I met Jonina at the Dania Cup and the funny thing was, that Jonina could recognize my voice from the trainingvideos. And then she came to me after i was running the course 🙂

Today we started up on the multiwraps and we elevated the plank with an brick more. We are stille running to a tunnel and a static toy.

Thanks Gitte--gives me an idea of what we’re looking for--i would recognize your voice as well. It would totally a crack up to hear one of the online students live!

I hope you had great time at DaniaCup, how cool to meet a classmate, doesn’t happen every day considering we all come from different parts of the world! Are you coming to EO too? Nice multi wraps, great contacts, no more air (other that 17). I think you can add more height already and move to real DW ramp now.

      • Gitte July 21, 2011 at 15:14 Log in to Reply

Yes we had a great time at Dania Cup. And Zinnia was really good 🙂
We are not participating in EO, as we have to choose sometimes, and we are going to Finland in the middle of august too, for participating in the Nordic Championships. And we need to work some times 😉

I will move to real dogwalk today 🙂 How exciting 🙂 🙂 🙂

        • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 18:14 Log in to Reply

Good luck with DW! Yeah, EO is pretty far for you this year… But close for us! 🙂 But next year… Not sure if I go either.

Maybe we could arrange a seminar with you in Denmark up to or after EO next year? 🙂

    Hi Silvia:
Here is Lesson #2. The first part is the multi-wraps and sequence. With the video, I now realize that I am SO late with my verbals and that Bender can only be reading my motion cues. Lots to work on here….I really want strong verbals in addition to my motion.

    Agility Foundations Lesson #2A-1/1

The second part is 2o/2o training for the teeter. The DW and Frame will be running. I started shaping the 2o/2o behaviour on various objects (box, stool, balance disc etc.) before transfering to the teeter. I have combined it now with the “bang” game at different heights. Bender has also run the full length of the teeter with someone holding up the tip end so it doesn’t fall. I have been working on his speed and drive to the obstacle. I wasn’t sure how much to do with the teeter so it didn’t confuse him for the running DW.

    Agility Foundations #2B-1/1

    • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 15:31 Log in to Reply

Looks good, especially right wraps. Work left wraps some more, he is somewhat wider there. And yes, use the verbal cues together with body language! You’re VERY late 🙂 Also, for the first jump, for me, that would be around-cap-cap. “Around” can be as well used for pushing the dog on the other side when you want extension jumping (when you keep going in that direction), so you do want to add collection cue too when it’s around with collection (vs. extension).

I think teeter work won’t affect his RC as he knows it so well already, so you can keep working on a teeter, but I would still play on other objects too and try to create even more drive, so that he drives more in a position.

      • Shona July 22, 2011 at 16:28 Log in to Reply

Thanks Siliva. I will work on left wraps and getting my verbal commands out much sooner…I like your explanation of the wrap command as well as “Around” for the collection. I have never used a collection command before so I need to understand better how to use it in sequences. My present agility dog (7 year old retriever) was never taught collection until later in her career. That’s why I am trying to do things so much differently with Bender.

Definitely Bender still has more drive and fun on playing on objects in 2o/2o position than on the teeter. I will work on increasing his drive for position.

        Shona and Bender

        • LoLaBu July 23, 2011 at 13:12 Log in to Reply

Yeah, it gets easier with time… Did you see the Cik&Cap video? You have some “real-life” examples of what is around+cik or just around or left/right vs. cik/cap there.

    • Laura July 21, 2011 at 17:09 Log in to Reply

Shona- just a suggestion…watch when you say break, you seem to pair it with motion. sometimes you release him on motion and then say break (44sec). -Laura

      • Shona July 22, 2011 at 16:31 Log in to Reply

Thanks Laura! Great observation -- Yes, releasing is another thing I need to pay closer attention to. I have never used my video camera for training before these classes (only for competition runs) Wow, the camera doesn’t lie!!!

    Here’s us giving your lesson 2 sequence a go…

the little sequence for practicing cik&cap

    • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 17:29 Log in to Reply

Nice! She is actually really fast and tight on jumps, it’s mostly the tunnel that slows her down… It’s true it’s hard for her as she is so tall, but I would still work on tunnels some more, to make them more fun for her and get a good drive for tunnels -- it helps a lot!

      • Dinah and Bronagh July 21, 2011 at 19:41 Log in to Reply

hmmm yes, she is slow, but she usually has good tunnel drive… I don’t know why not in this sequence… the heat maybe and also perhaps we don’t have it sandbagged down securely enough… we are using bungie cords and empty laundry detergent bottles filled with water and I think it moves around too much, we probably could do better

I will work on more tunnel drive tho, you can never have enough tunnel drive!!!! (we just bought another used one, a bargain in pretty great condition)

        • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 23:10 Log in to Reply

I agree! You can never have enough tunnel drive -- and you can never have enough tunnels! I have 6!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 -- Bu’s birthday present 🙂

    Judy Reilly Class Sequence 7 20 11

    Hi Silvia,
This is a video of a sequence we did in in class today that shows Matilda’s contacts. It was very hot!! We’re doing a running A-Frame and a 2on2off Teeter and Dog Walk. I’m trying now to be really consistent in class with my criteria for the 2on2off. I’m afraid I really have not been in the past. I’m hoping if she’s really sure of her job she will get faster and she’ll be more consistent at trials. With the weaves she often has trouble when she is somewhere not at home. At home I can send her from anywhere, any entrance, from distance and she is fine. I will keep proofing her with distractions (throwing toys, my motion toward her and away from her).

I’ll post another video of her showing her contacts at a recent trial.

    Liza

    • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 17:34 Log in to Reply

Yes, I think she needs more experience on weaves in different places. Is she also slower on other places or is it because of the heat? Because she was sure faster in handling class! I would work on speeding up her 2on2off also at home, on a box or something: have her hurry up in the position for anything she finds exciting -- before greeting somebody who gets home, before dinner, before walk etc. Restraining games before the object and then racing to a toy/food positioned well after the “contact” are great too.

      • Liza July 21, 2011 at 20:23 Log in to Reply

I agree Matilda was very slow in this video. She can be much faster. It was VERY hot, but also I didn’t get her excited to run before the run. After I got out the toy at the weaves she perked up. I should have gotten her engaged before we began even though it was hot. Good idea to have her hurry up into the 2on2off position at all different times and situations. At home I do often use a board to practice. I have her run the board, treat for the stop in position, throw a toy, after it lands I usually wait a moment and release her to the toy. But doing it in non agility situations is a great idea.

        Liza

        • LoLaBu July 21, 2011 at 23:28 Log in to Reply

At this point, I actually wouldn’t treat her in a position at all anymore and definitely wouldn’t keep her in a position too long -- it’s too boring, no need to hurry up then. AND it looks too much different from what you do at the competition then!!! So I would simply race her into the position and her reward for finding it would be the release to a toy positioned ahead. Keep her in a position for as long as you would in trial, no need to keep her there longer once the dog understands the position!

Here are two runs from a trial earlier this month. In the Standard she came to a 2on2off for the Dog Walk but not for the Teeter.
