Here comes your second homework!
1. multi-wraps with handler in different positions: set a bar at your current cik&cap height and have a dog do multiple wraps around the wing. Change your position so that you're sometimes on take-off side, sometimes on landing side of the jump. Reward by reaching in with a toy to reward close to the wing. Multi-wraps should always be your first exercise when you put the bars on the next height and you should keep working on them on each height, it's great collection jumping exercise, I actually do some before every training, within our warm-up.
2. cik&cap sequencing: we'll mask this training for different handler positions and moves into a little sequence and include a tunnel for extra fun 🙂 Start with cap on one, try cik with handler on a landing side on 3, a shoulder pull from 4 to 5, cap with a front cross on 5, tunnel again and then push for another cik on 7. Reward in the direction of where I set number 8. Break it down in little parts first.
3. 2on2off vs. running: time to address contacts! Send a video of whatever you've got till now if you are already working on it. If you haven't done anything about it yet, those two videos show first step of 2on2off (at 3:13 of this video) - stopping in the position on a box/upside down drawer:
and running (at 1:30 of this video - I hope it's fine I used your video Gitte 🙂 ) - running over a long carpet:
If you haven't decided yet, you can work on both, using a box or up-side-down drawer for 2on2off and a carpet or a wide, thin plank for running contacts - and then see what you like better.
ok, I just learned something about myself…I don’t know my left from my right :). Maybe I should stick to your words cik/cap so I don’t have to translate to my words.
🙂 If it helps any: it gets easier 🙂
Wow, great homework! It will be very fun! 🙂 I decided to do RC and 2on2off. We do 2on2off using a box. I have wide and thin plank but it isn’t very long. It has only 2 m. Is that ok? I have practised RC on this plank (flat) and Azja does this great. I haven’t lifted up this plank yet. I will send a video soon.
Yes, to start with, 2m is o.k. But do find a longer one (min. 3m) as you’ll need it to start raising it.
Hello Silvia,
A question about your sequence’s 1st fence :
don’t you need to add an “out-order” first to get the dog jumps from outside?
to my understanding, in this case, a cap would be: jump and then wrap right instead of wrap and then jump
How the dog will be able to make the difference?
Is my question clear?
Thank you
Céline
It’s the body language. I’m blocking the “in” approach , so it’s obvious for them that it’s from out.
You don’t use a different word for the back side of a jump?
I do when the dog needs to do it on their own. Here, I’m blocking the other approach to the jump, so there can’t be any confusion.
ok thank you. as a beginner, nothing is obvious to me !
I had the same question and was quite in awe of the cap on Jump 1. I understand what Silvia is saying and it will be interesting to try to execute.
Lois
Multi wraps with handler: somehow I feel that’s a prerequisite for my dogs before attempting the cik&cap chase games from lesson 1 that were quite a struggle for me as Byuti and Esprit’s drive got very high resulting in high chase focus but low obstacle focus. As mentioned I did work both with treats and slow pace instead of high drive chase.
Yeap, they need to understand cik&cap well for that + understand the concept that in order to get that very tempting reward, you need to focus on your job first.
Can you use the same word for both directions, like “tight”?
hi laura
Iam the same as you,, I can never get right or left right.. So I just say round to murph, it seems to be working for me. I think…
Hi laura..
Iam the same as you.. SO I just use round for both directions..
Yes. We had the discussion on that before.
Hi Silvia,
Sorry we are far behind on homework. I am hoping to get some videos done this week. One thing that is difficult for us is that I can not view your videos on my iPad. So I must drive w my laptop computer to a public place to get them. Is it possible to send them in a different format that would play on the iPad?
Thx
Trisha
You mean you can’t see the videos I post or all the posted youtube videos on my site? That’s strange, they definitely can be seen on iPhone… Do you have Flash player installed?
There’s no flash player for ipad. Not yet at least… We can watch very few videos on your site from the ipad; but most of them we can’t, included the ones you post. We need a “normal” computer.
same problem for me, so I have to use a regular computer
O.k., my boyfriend’s reply -- I have no clue 🙂 -- there are ways how to get flash content played on an ipad but you need to be a bit technical… You could jailbreak your ipad and install Frash -- flash player for ipad. Another possibility is that you tether your 3G to your laptop and you can also google for other solutions -- there are more.
The ipad and iphone wont play videos that require adobe flash player 🙁 so some of the you tube videos play but many dont. None of our lesson videos that you have posted will play. A few of student submitted videos play. They do play on a regular computer. Unfortunately we live in a rural area with no access to wifi but we do have 3G service so the ipad works best for internet (except for adobe flash videos )
Here’s a video from this morning of Nero’s current running contact setup. It’s a 6 ft plank and a 12ft seesaw combination. I’ll eventually add the other 6ft plank and look for a total of four strides. Right now we are consistantly at three strides. Usually I send to a tunnel and when that happens he is less collected than here. I also have 24 ft of planks in my side yard that he runs many times a day when going from the front to the back yard. Next winter when he’s over a year I’ll start training on regulation equipment at a training facility that our club rents from the fairgrounds.
Does anyone here use Mac and know how to get an app to do slowmotion?
Nancy
Put it in iMovie and then you can go slo-mo.
Hm… I don’t like that hoop at the end thing… How do you plan to fade it?
Hi Silvia, Thanks for your question. With Kili and Saales I faded the hoop by moving it gradually further and further away. Whenever they failed I would bring it back to the beginning till they didn’t need them anymore. Both were retrains from stopped contacts. I guess it’s an old habit from training running contacts on my first dogs. I’ll go back down low and see what my contacts look like without it.
Nancy
Hi
Concate time..
I have major problem whit contacts, Murph keeps jumping them.
We have no foundation whit contacts as we start Agilityas fun, and never thought about contacts, Now we are pay for it. here is a litte video of where we are
Also I have question for you on Play.
Murph in the park loves his Squeak toys, but when it come to agility and shows, he Those not like them and just want food.
On Sunday at a show, he would not play whit, ( he was fine not sick) so I put in time out, and let him watch me play whit his toy…
Then when he came out it worked , he was made for his toy!!
But it only worked the frist time..
IS there any thing I can do to improve his paly around agility.
He only gets the toy when training.
Thank you for reading..
Sinead
O.k., just turn the box upside down and make it less dependent on your position (for now, he stops when you stop and he starts when you start). Also, try to build even more speed into the position, I use restrain for that too.
As for toys… -- Sounds like he simply thinks that with agility, there comes food. Don’t let him choose. Only bring toys and if he refuses them, that’s fine, don’t give him food either and try again after the next try.
How long a piece of carpet should we be using? My yard is too small to practice, but I could take a carpet roll to the park to practice. I’m assuming it should be about the width of a dog walk, but I’m unsure on length.
No, no, that’s a very wrong assumption 🙂 The major reason we’re using a carpet over a plank is because it’s easy to get one that is wide enough. It should be at least 1m wide, to make it easier for her to stay on while running full speed, without worrying about it. The length is not so important for now, but I always prefer longer as too short, so I would go for the same length as DW down ramp, as it’s easy to roll and carry anyway.
Thanks. I’m off to the carpet store 😉
DW down ramp is 12 feet? I tried googling it and got 2 different answers 8 feet and 12 feet.
Does it matter how much room you have after the carpet? My yard isn’t very big, but I can try to make it work.
most venues only allow the 12″ in the US.
Yes, it’s 12 in US and somewhat longer in Europe. After that, you need at least 5 meters more (more with bigger dogs), so that they can exit the carpet full speed -- probably even more if there is a fence right after, most dogs don’t feel comfortable running full speed towards the fence…
Hi Silvia and Classmates,
Here’s a bunch of video snips from trials. I taught Speed a 2o2o but never used it because of motivation issues.
We lacked any real training on contacts and the video shows it! Because we don’t have easy access to full equipment I’ve stayed away from running contacts. Since it takes him 5-7 secs to cross a DW or A-Frame, I’m reluctant to make him stop with a 2o2o. He likes to play King of the Mountain on the A-frame….
What do you suggest we do to retrain? I have planks he can run on. I think he would have more fun with running contacts, but I am concerned about how to train and maintain. On the other hand, I am concerned 2o2o will demotivate him.
Thank you, Lois
Oh, maintaince of RC is easy, you shouldn’t worry about that 🙂 Looks like you’re loosing the most on A-frame, so I would probably suggest running A-frame and 2on2off on DW, but speeding the 2on2off by playing restraining games of making him run into 2on2off position on a box or something and making it a real fun game. The only problem is that when only training for running on A-frame, I do it on real a A-frame right from the start… Any option to build something like two wide planks attached together, with something underneath to support them?
To play the restrain game on the A frame to build speed to 2o2o position, could we just lower the A frame as low as it can go? Do you start from the beginning of the A frame or do you have them ‘hop’ onto from the side onto the position. Does food tend to slow them down, should you use toys to reward speed to 2o2o position?
I usually start with an object like an up-side-down drawer as you can practise that at home, whenever he is extra excited about something (dinner, walk, coming home from work etc.) and make it really short and fun. When transferring to real obstacles, you should lower them if you can, yes, and have him jump on it from the side, first from very close to the end and then gradually further back. And yes, as soon as the dog understands the position, I switch from food to toys as toys promote speed.
