Foundation 2

Here comes your second homework!

1. multi-wraps with handler in different positions: set a bar at your current cik&cap height and have a dog do multiple wraps around the wing. Change your position so that you're sometimes on take-off side, sometimes on landing side of the jump. Reward by reaching in with a toy to reward close to the wing. Multi-wraps should always be your first exercise when you put the bars on the next height and you should keep working on them on each height, it's great collection jumping exercise, I actually do some before every training, within our warm-up.

2. cik&cap sequencing: we'll mask this training for different handler positions and moves into a little sequence and include a tunnel for extra fun 🙂 Start with cap on one, try cik with handler on a landing side on 3, a shoulder pull from 4 to 5, cap with a front cross on 5, tunnel again and then push for another cik on 7. Reward in the direction of where I set number 8. Break it down in little parts first.

3. 2on2off vs. running: time to address contacts! Send a video of whatever you've got till now if you are already working on it. If you haven't done anything about it yet, those two videos show first step of 2on2off (at 3:13 of this video) - stopping in the position on a box/upside down drawer:

Lexus Final Tricks Video

and running (at 1:30 of this video - I hope it's fine I used your video Gitte 🙂 ) - running over a long carpet:

2011.04.25_RC_Zushi.avi

If you haven't decided yet, you can work on both, using a box or up-side-down drawer for 2on2off and a carpet or a wide, thin plank for running contacts - and then see what you like better.

Hi there Silvia and class mates.

Wow congrats for qualifying for world champs.

Oh my goodness i have so much reading and watching to catch up with, i hope i can do it slowly this week.

Well not much videoing these last 2 weeks and while we where away just a little, but crazy enough i took a short tunnel and some portible jumps and our weaves!

I have a few things that i have noticed looking at the videos, she seems to be pre curving the jumps, in the sequence that is, on her own, or maybe it is my body, not sure if i am right and or if this is a problem? I did add just a little height to the jumps not sure if that was ok?

In muti wraps she seems good but i am a bit unsure if and why we dont seem to get it as tight with x 8. Perhaps i have tried to go to fast? And the speed between jumps in x8 i think could be better, not sure how to improve this?

I have said it before wilst on puppy class and you did say i should not see a difference, but she is in season again and seems to get a bit touchy and sensitive and drop in drive!

Looking forward to your comments and i will post our weaves next.
    thank you.

GREAT job with the sequence!!! Very fast and tight on all the jumps! Pre curving is o.k. if she chooses that’s the easiest way herself, but don’t push her out yourself (it doesn’t seem you do to me!). Very tight on multi-wraps too, you can definitely add some more height. Figure 8s are maybe harder as she comes with more speed, so I think she is actually tight enough, just keep rewarding her as you do. To add even more speed, you can spread the two jumps even more.

And yes, if you’re seeing the pattern, then it could be hormones throw her off some. Hope she is back to normal soon!

Hi there Silvia and class mates again.
This is where we are with weave poles, not the best session but we have not taped too much so here goes.
Cant wait for comment, so we can learn more.
    Thank you.

Very cool!!! Keep closing the channel, sending her in from strange angles and doing strange things while she is in -- as simple as that 🙂

Oh wow! Thanks for the inspiration of what I can try next with the weaves with my pup. That was really combining our exercises in a creative way (to me).

Wow Alicia and Spy GREAT weaves!! You gave me your great idea: send around a jump first and then go in the weaves! Thanks for that!

Thank you, hee hee, it is all this ‘tip and tuck’ work that made me think of it, 2 jobs at the same time, i started the jumps at 12 o,clock and moved them slowly round, but always so you wrap the wing, enjoy, your Jin is doing so well too, happy training.

    Hi Silvia, Classmates,

Here our first video on the lesson II. When I watched it looks to me that I’m overhandling here and there. I even push her wide on the turns. What do you think?
I still sometimes have an issue with Keen losing focus. The wandering off is getting less and less but it still happens. I just leave the field when it happens and leave her behind. From the moment I leave she gets to the gate and waits there for me to return. When I do she has these eyes saying, “where did you go, we were playing!” and she is really eager to go on. For about 30 seconds…I do see eagerness in her eyes but always for a very short period. I keep the sessions short, 2-3 minutes. During these minutes I play most of the time and try 2 sequences. That’s it. Should I keepthe session even shorter? Keep the sequence shorter??
The thing is that I have a hard time finding out what causes the loss of focus. I have trained very sensitive dogs before, I have seen a lot of “alternative behaviors”, like sniffing, yawning, barking when dogs do not understand the task, feel pressure… But with Keen, I just do not know. It does not look like a lack of confidence, sensitivity. I’m really careful not to misinterpret it. Do you have an idea? Especially the last clip, the multiwrap. Well half a wrap! How do you “read” this?
Overall we are doing well, we are having fun but sometimes… I do not get frustrated but confused, yes. But I would like to understand why Keen sometimes does this.

    • LoLaBu July 25, 2011 at 01:03 Log in to Reply

Cool, that’s really nice speed and mostly really tight turns! Those that are wider are mostly when you push her yes 🙂 You are overhandling some, but mostly really nice work and nice and fluent handling. It really doesn’t make sense why you just loose her sometimes… But yes, I think I would try with even shorter sessions. If she still wanders off, maybe try to take another dog and play some with her/him? Or, maybe even better, to prevent it from happening in a first place: always have two dogs out at the same time, do one short exercise with Keen, play to reward, switch to another dog and then back to Keen. I think they can learn a lot about the attitude by watching another, enthusiastic dog and when switching dogs, it’s easier to keep sessions really short. When I train, I always either have my large or medium dogs out and then switch between the two after every sequence/course -- that’s the major reason I like to have two dogs on the same jump height 🙂 -- and I actually jump La lower now as Le is not yet on full height. It indeed doesn’t look stress to me, so I think this might help.

      • Jennifer July 25, 2011 at 15:35 Log in to Reply

Yes, working with another dog really made Buddy more eager!! I was helping one of my classmates with her dog, while Buddy was watching from his crate. When it was our turn he was sooo happy that I was playing with him!! We did half the sequence at lightning speed and he tugged like he was possessed! Too bad I didn’t tape it. I think we missed one turn, but overall it was great. It was very short, maybe 2 minutes including play. That was it for the day. The others asked me why I stopped and if I wanted to go again and show them the sequence, but I said that was enough for him. 🙂
Not enough outside practice though, I got the weave poles and haven’t done it even once. We have record high temperatures and I am covered in mosquitoe bites. 🙁

        • Kathy July 25, 2011 at 17:24 Log in to Reply

Very, very cool that Buddy is happily working with you again! And I know what you mean about the record temperatures 🙁 it’s even too hot for agility up here in Maine! We’ve been doing lots of swimming but not much agility 🙂

          • Jennifer July 25, 2011 at 18:42 Log in to Reply

Yeah, I hope we can do it again 🙂 I’ve been singing that Katy Perry song for him “Hot and Cold”, he thinks it’s really funny. He’s probably tone deaf. 🙂
Swimming sounds great! Buddy doesn’t like our pool, he prefers the smelly swamp, and I am terrified of the alligators and water snakes.
Kathy, I forgot what breed your dog is. Koolie? BC?

            • Kathy July 26, 2011 at 00:34 Log in to Reply

We think she is a Cattle Dog/BC cross. Definitely Cattle Dog crossed with something to give her the finer bones, longer coat & feathery tail. But she’s a rugged little girl with lots of attitude! I just adore her! 🙂

              • Jennifer July 26, 2011 at 00:49 Log in to Reply

Yes, she is great! I have an affinity for the mix or oddball dogs. I think you’re right ACD/BC cross. I have been looking at BC breeders and while I think they are great dogs, I am not 100% sure yet that it’s the dog for me.

        • LoLaBu July 25, 2011 at 22:07 Log in to Reply

Sounds great! Try to always get this attitude by leaving him in a crate or tied somewhere first (while playing with another dog or, when not possible, maybe just running a sequence yourself), then give him a chance to run and if he is not feeling like it, back to the crate/leash again.

I attempted to do the sequence with Blast. He has been on bed rest for 2 weeks. It was cool out and he seems to be starting to feel better. In the first attempt at the end he thought I was rear crossing. In the second attempt he paused at the end to cough/sneeze (something like that). This is the only time I have run this sequence. I think my commands are late.

    • LoLaBu July 25, 2011 at 14:34 Log in to Reply

Glad to see Blast is back! He sure looks great! And yeap, somewhat late with the commands, but he reads your handing well enough to be really tight anyway -- on all turns but the one you spotted yourself already 🙂 Do some more training for that approach, ask him for some multi-wraps after the tunnel and reward for tightness. Changing hands sooner (pre-cuing front cross) would be another way to help him tighten up -- if you see my video, it’s at 1:02 I change hands (would do somewhat later with shorter striding dog -- but still way before the dog takes off). Also, to avoid the confusion at the end, I would be cuing that jump with right hand if rear crossing -- and left hand if wrapping (to pre-cue the front cross).

We managed to get a few runs with our new carpet bf my camera went flat. When i threw the ball well she seemed to do very well. I put the best one in slow motion. I was having difficulty marking and jackpotting the good ones. Do you jackpot the good ones with a big play or food (guess it depends on the dog)? What word do you use to mark it?

    • LoLaBu July 25, 2011 at 15:18 Log in to Reply

Seeing what she is doing will get easier, but yes, you want to mark it as she is running over the carpet. I try to click when they’re touching the carpet towards the end and go all happy and excited with my voice for the best ones -- I think I use “bravo”, but I think it’s more about the voice as such as the word. But you need to do it as she is running the carpet, not when she is bringing the ball back. How to jackpot depends on a dog, can be another, favourite toy, tugging, more ball throws or food -- whatever they like best. Always bring her to the carpet from straight, not from the side as I can see in one try. But yes, she is running it really nicely. Maybe you should do running DW too! 🙂

    • camilla July 26, 2011 at 01:16 Log in to Reply

Yeah, silly me! I was rewarding her retrieves rather than running. I think she would much rather running contacts than 2 on 2 off -- it’s just a matter of whether i can train it. Would i need a full DW to train running DW? I’m trying to find someone to make me a Aframe that will lie flat..not having much luck at the moment. What week will we start that? (just so i know how long i have to organise it) 🙂

      • LoLaBu July 26, 2011 at 11:33 Log in to Reply

Well, you could get away with minimum equipment if you found a hilly area that would allow you to prop your plank like shown at 2:00 of this video:

        Phoebe & running contacts

Then you would only need a plank and one object to support it in the middle. Without the hill 🙂 , I think you would, for such a long-strided dog, need at least two full length planks (12ft), set into a mini DW, to allow her speedy approach to the down ramp.

I think RC would be relatively easy for Grace as she likes to chase her ball and learns so quickly. AND, if you go for running DW, then you don’t need an A-frame at all, so one problem solved 🙂 But yes, it takes some time and dedication…

    Hi Silvia and classmates
here is our contribution, about multi wraps, cik&cap sequence (small size). and contacts in our last training in my club.
i found that when i’m barking Dou becomes crazier and now i want her to bark before starting running agility.. is it a good way?
yesterday we had a trial and it was so difficult for Doucette. she’s doing things but she was so slower than she can be. During the last run she suddenly stopped and started to poo, then i had to go away from the field. is the message clear? : “Running agility with so much people watching me and this scary guy in the middle of the field ‘me fait chier’ (in french i don’t know if it’s the same in english language)”
if you agree Silvia i will put trial video and you’ll see how she is different in trials.

    • LoLaBu July 26, 2011 at 00:05 Log in to Reply

Great speed and very tight on all, only 5 is somewhat wider -- but already much better on 2nd try. Contacts look good, especially DW, she is somewhat slower on A-frame, would be nice to have running there, but I wouldn’t change anything for now to not confuse her even more and would focus on her attitude on trials… How is she when not running agility? Is she comfortable doing tricks, heeling and playing with you around the rings when it’s not her turn? Is it just agility that stresses her? And yes, sure, send a video! Best would be to have a video of the whole process, from taking her out of a crate till the end -- to see at what point she starts stressing… And yes, definitely teach her to bark on cue and ask her to bark before every run! It makes them excited even when they aren’t 🙂

      • Valérie July 26, 2011 at 21:16 Log in to Reply

On trials she’s not as comfortable to play (but she plays only when she’s really comfortable or in places she knows well) but she can doing tricks for food, we do a lot before running, fortunately on sunday there were no loudspeakers and no kids in the field.
        here is the video

we have another trial next sunday, i’ll ask to have a video for A1 run because i have more time for Doucette (because Adagio is in A2). and there will be music and loudspeakers and kids :-S
        thank you for watching! 😉

        • LoLaBu July 26, 2011 at 23:34 Log in to Reply

Well, she is actually running really well as long as you’re running! That straight line out was great! As soon as you need to slow down (when she is in weaves, on that 270 degree turn, after a refusal…), she starts to stress. So I would definitely NOT redo any refusal, I think I also wouldn’t redo weaves or anything else for now and if there is a circle like that one at the end, I would just skip it and run ahead… The judges will probably be somewhat surprised, but I think you need to do it. Try taking her out of her crate in the last minute for her run, excite her, come into the ring running, tell her to spin, bark and start running, no stay. Keep running no matter what, your only focus should be to keep her in movement. When you come out of the ring, just keep running to a safe, calm place and make a big party. Once she relaxes and changes her attitude, you’ll be able to ask for more, but for now, only ask for running, make up your own course and don’t worry about other people that might be somewhat surprised 🙂

          • Valérie July 27, 2011 at 08:40 Log in to Reply

OK, no problem for me to be disq every time, i can be patient. But i ask myself if every of my dog will be like that? Adagio had the same problem 🙂 Ok Doucette is his daughter but i’m not sure that it’s genetical. 🙂
i think judge and people in the ring stress her too. in the final circle (GPF) she looks at the judge and she’s loosing confidence.
i’ll try to apply your advices, thank you. but i can’t excite her before the run because of the rules. we have to come in the start with dog heeling and we have to stop the dog, wait for the judge allowing us to start and start. In Slovenia last summer it was so fun to start with Doucette in my arms and run, but in France it’s impossible. and if you’re disq you have to stop your run and go out. (sometimes judge allows to finish) so if Doucette doesn’t do weave poles well, for example, i can’t continue. it’s because i wanted to stop trials in France, but passion is bigger. (and Adagio is amazing now, we have so much fun together and it’s because of you and Polona!) i’ll try to find a solution to override this stupid laws.

            • LoLaBu July 27, 2011 at 13:19 Log in to Reply

Oh, right, the stupid rules again!!! Can you come in in running heel? 🙂 Then stop to check with the judge, tell her to spin and bark and then run? It’s the most stupid rule ever that you HAVE to finish your weaves! And yes, sure, I also think it’s other people that are stressing her, but as long as you really run, she is busy enough to not notice it. Not sure where the problem originates from, but if you solved it with Adagio, I’m sure you can solve it with Doucette too!

Here is my video of Lesson 2.

Because of bad weather that we have now, it becomes difficult to train us outdoors and I can’t use the camera when it rains.

In this video Dinamit had more difficulties to turn right than left. And because I was not very satisfied with her CAP on jump number 5, I decided to make several CAP -- tunnel, CAP -- tunnel until I was satisfied with her CAP.

For the bar falling several times, the problem is that the bar is too short. So at the slightest vibration or wind it falls. I really need a longer bar.

Otherwise what do you think of our work?

Thank you in advance for your answer!

    • LoLaBu July 25, 2011 at 23:46 Log in to Reply

Cool! Some really nice multi-wraps and very tight (and fast!) also in a sequence -- other than on 5!!! 5 is still not good, try some more of this approach, send to left tunnel -- not right as you are doing as that changes the approach and she is tight on that approach anyway -- her problem seems to be with more straight, fast approaches. She is perfect when she needs to change the direction for 180 degrees, but when she would basically just need to collect and turn a little bit, she FLIES. You can do it wit a bar on the floor first -- reward if she is tight, send into another cap on the same jump immediately if she is wide. Try the same approach from left exit of the tunnel to the right jump too, doing cik (mirror sequence). No other problems, great job!

Thanks for your help, I will try again and train as you said. I think the lesson 3 will be a very good exercise for us ^_^

    Hi everybody! 😀

Wow everybody is doing great!! I’ve watched every video and read all the comments, I hope I have time this evening to respond but if I don’t here’s to all of you: I am learning so much from you all!!! You guys are doing GREAT! 😀 (y)
Here are some video’s from were we are at this moment, I forgot to tape nr 1. (multi-wraps with handler in different positions) but we sure practiced! 🙂

So here is nr 2: cik&cap sequencing: (At the end she almost knocks me down! 😀 )

    Nr 3: 2on2off vs. running.
I haven’t taped 2o2o but I did buy a carpet and here is our very first running on it! Whuahahahaha I am realy not knowing what we are doing… she is so fast and I have to respond so quickly that I just clicked every time 😀 We sure had FUN!
I don’t have a program were we can put it in slow motion. (And if I download a new program I think our computer dies :/ )

Is there somebody who wants to do it for me please?

Oh and the weaves… almost in 1 line 😀

    Greets Jonina & Jin

    • LoLaBu July 26, 2011 at 00:21 Log in to Reply

Very cool! No problems with the sequence: great speed, tight turns and clear handling! 🙂 Almost there with the weaves too! The carpet, she runs very well when you throw a toy in time. When you’re behind, you throw too late and then her striding is off -- like in your third try (1:00) -- ideally you wouldn’t click that, but then, the wrong movement was caused by your throw -- it’s normal at this stage. So either be in front (like 1st and 2nd try) -- BUT it’s harder to see her striding that way, so I would actually recommend staying behind, focusing on her striding, but being faster by throwing, thanks to sending her to a wrap or a tunnel first -- that makes it easier to throw early enough AND you practise two things at the same time 🙂

    • camilla July 26, 2011 at 02:08 Log in to Reply

Wow! That’s amazing. Great turns -- funny to think you were having problems w cik/cap a few wks ago & I can’t believe she’s nearly doing full weaves already! She is so fast on that carpet i wouldn’t have a hope of telling what stride she was doing 🙂 Even when silvia pointed out that she wasn’t striding right at 1:00 I still couldn’t tell.
      Well done 🙂

I think we are getting better! We are having fun, so that makes me happy 🙂 I tried a couple of times to get Tibby to do 2 things in a row -- cik and then the tunnel, but she isn’t ready yet. She also doesn’t think it is necessary to do mutiwraps! She told me off -- shook her head and then took the tunnel. It was really funny 🙂 She has her own mind about things!

I split the vid in 2 -- for some reason I can’t upload any video longer than 4 mins.

Cool! She is so cute playing at the beginning of the video! And so fast when she is doing her zoomies! GREAT that she comes in to you in between, so try to just reward that by running away with her toy and having her chase you -- don’t stop it by grabbing her collar! That’s contra productive: you come and you get grabbed. It should be you come and we play together! 🙂 Anyway, she seems to like all the new toys! On the plank, you can start clicking as she is running at the end of it. If you don’t have a wider plank, make some kind of a channel (poles or cones or you could even use a tunnel as a barrier to keep her on) -- it’s really just a waste of time to try to teach her to stay on. It’s better to focus on just running and having fun. Well, you’re definitely on the way there! Great job, was fun to watch Tibby so happy!

Maybe it’s better you reset it first and try a couple of more before rewarding…
