Foundation 2

Here comes your second homework!

1. multi-wraps with handler in different positions: set a bar at your current cik&cap height and have a dog do multiple wraps around the wing. Change your position so that you're sometimes on take-off side, sometimes on landing side of the jump. Reward by reaching in with a toy to reward close to the wing. Multi-wraps should always be your first exercise when you put the bars on the next height and you should keep working on them on each height, it's great collection jumping exercise, I actually do some before every training, within our warm-up.

2. cik&cap sequencing: we'll mask this training for different handler positions and moves into a little sequence and include a tunnel for extra fun 🙂 Start with cap on one, try cik with handler on a landing side on 3, a shoulder pull from 4 to 5, cap with a front cross on 5, tunnel again and then push for another cik on 7. Reward in the direction of where I set number 8. Break it down in little parts first.

3. 2on2off vs. running: time to address contacts! Send a video of whatever you've got till now if you are already working on it. If you haven't done anything about it yet, those two videos show first step of 2on2off (at 3:13 of this video) - stopping in the position on a box/upside down drawer:

Lexus Final Tricks Video

and running (at 1:30 of this video - I hope it's fine I used your video Gitte 🙂 ) - running over a long carpet:

2011.04.25_RC_Zushi.avi

If you haven't decided yet, you can work on both, using a box or up-side-down drawer for 2on2off and a carpet or a wide, thin plank for running contacts - and then see what you like better.

I am beginning to have problems viewing the videos. Lots of stops and goes. Any suggestions from anybody?
    Thanks

Looks perfect on 8″ and nice on 12″, but I would probably go to 10″ first 🙂

Hi Silvia, Here’s the sequence part of our lesson. It’s funny when I see something on video and it’s not as fast as i perceive. Anyway I’m pretty happy with his turns. I had to add the jump bar yesterday because he kept stepping on the bottom support bar of the jump and slipping or falling. He adapted to this bar pretty quick. I took the hoop away from my contact and took it back to 12 feet and wide on the ground. I could easily see that he was running harder without the hoop’s forced collection. I’ll make the sure the hits are good and consistent and go from there. He seems to be catching balls more safely so I’m slowly reintroducing some throws.

Great job with the sequence!!! What a nice and tight turns! He generalized the wraps really well and yes, it’s o.k. to use low bars, he is still very tight. You can also send the plank work, to see how he is doing.

Hi Silvia, Thanks for the compliments. I had a herding lesson this weekend which was great and it gave me a great AhHa experience with relation to this exercise. When the dog is “wearing” on the sheep and pushing them forward they need to have a great ability to turn tight as they switch directions. Nero is way ahead of this for his age. It’s common for dog to turn lazily as they switch directions and as a result they come in too close to the sheep and then everything gets too fast. If the dog turn so tight that they almost over turn the sheep stay calmer and easier to direct. I’m just loving that so many things from my “agility” class apply to my new herding goals. We’re in a heat wave, but I’ll get some more plank work sent in before the next lesson.

Yes, it’s amazing how closely related different dog sports actually are. Schutzhund people are always very impressed by sends, distance, speed and tightness of cik&cap dogs, doing the search work for a decoy around those things the decoy is hidden behind (don’t know the English word for it…).

Nice and tight on multi-wraps! Great job with the sequence too, you could of course do a front cross on 5 to avoid that rear cross on 6, but well, the wraps are sure going really well. I’m only doing wraps at first with the reason, to teach them to jump close to the wing and to make wraps a lot of fun. Straight lines only teach them to jump in the middle and they don’t learn much more as that. We’ll introduce some straight lines in next lesson though, but just in order to challenge their wraps some more 🙂

    Hi Silvia
We are having problems with the multi- wraps -- He does not seemed too keen to do multiple wraps and tend to go slow. Also, he seems to focus too much on my hand & then knock the bar -- but he is great when we do the jump tunnel sequence… Should I lower the bar for the multi wraps? -- We have practised a bit of wrapping the cone in Puppy class.

I have the same problem when i do multi-warps, she go slow and she makes circles more and more wide!

      • LoLaBu July 17, 2011 at 14:40 Log in to Reply

You don’t need to do tons of them, start with two or three in a row. To make it more fun, be more active yourself -- see Gabriel’s video, it shows some very nice wraps.

    • LoLaBu July 17, 2011 at 14:39 Log in to Reply

Yes, multi-wraps are hard to start on a high bar, so if you haven’t done them on a jump yet, definitely put the bar very very low first!

  6. trishakoetter July 14, 2011 at 18:40 Log in to Reply

Fury trying sequence w tunnel/wraps -- we started out w jumps at 12″ and she was wide on turns, particularly turning to her right. so I lowered jumps to 8″ and it seemed better. ( I had done the same exercise yesterday w non-winged jumps and she was very tight. ) Then I went back to the 12″ and seemed better but still wide on rt turns.
Let me know what you think.
    Thx!
    Trisha

I agree with your observations, you certainly want to work some more on 8 or, even better -- 10, before going for 12. But try making sequences shorter and throw a ball more to make it more fun, I think she could run faster. Also, are you using your wrap verbal cues or not? She sometimes looks like she just follows the body language, not really focusing on a wrap -- and that of course makes them wider.

    Hi there Silvia
We go away in the morning until next week friday but our dogs are going with and we get to hike and climb mountains and just have a great time. i am taking some very basic jumps and my weave poles and a short tunnel i have borrowed from a friend as mine takes up twice the space. i will video and post when back just before lesson 3. I dont want to get too far behind like we are in RC. Spy has done nicely so far this week but no time to post. wow and hopefully try catch up with my husbands lap top, on all the other posts, as i do and then i look again and there are many more wow. quite exiting when i get back we hopefully will have rubber mats and can get our DW back up and running. Hopefully by then all Spy’s funny back legs are well forgotten!

Hello Silvia. I have decided to take up your offer and transfer to the next Foundation Class. Sassy has a strained muscle and is not allowed to run for 4-6 weeks, she will be having laser therapy on the leg which should help with recovery. It is very hard to keep a Border Collie like Sassy quiet 🙂 but maybe I can concentrate on some tricks for a while.
I look forward to continuing the class with you in August. Thanks again for your offer. Cheers and good luck everyone.
    Tricia

Bye Tricia. Hope that Sassy will get better soon. Have fun with the tricks and next AF class!

    • LoLaBu July 17, 2011 at 16:44 Log in to Reply

Sure, she can still do tricks, but with Foundations, it’s definitely better to wait. The next class will start in autumn, probably October, so mail me then to give you an access! Wishing Sassy a fast recovery!

    Hello all!

Here’s our first video. The videos form class1 I have to edit them, I hope I could put it soon.

    Cheers!! 😀

Would be good to see lesson 1 too yes, I would like to see if she runs faster when chasing you and when keeping a sequence short. Because I really think she could run faster… Maybe do some more one jump exercises with lots of running and playing in between? Also, spread the obstacles more so that you can both run more in between. Also, the right jump is too high, put the bar on the wing legs instead.

      • Nuria July 18, 2011 at 12:58 Log in to Reply

Yes, he runs faster, but here, there’s not too much space. Ok we’ll repeat the exercice tomorrow, with the bar lower 😀 I’m working on the lesson 1 homework, but I have some computer problems :S
