Foundations Class

duration
6 lessons, one every 2 weeks
= 12 weeks of feedback + 2 weeks of a break in between
requirements
-minimal age: 7 months
- minimal equipment needed: 4 jumps, 2 tunnels, NEW Foundations DVD, channel and see-saw (if working on weaves&see-saw as well)
- appropriate for all levels, total beginners to experienced dogs who could use better turns, more independence or speed

The class follows Foundations Revisited DVD. The major differences with the old format:

  1. Ta taught me the importance of pre-obstacle work, so working on really very basic ground skills that make all the rest go way more smoothly... - so lesson 1 is all away from obstacles now.
  2. I couldn't stand people redoing sequences over&over again even when I kept saying not to do it... So now sequences are only in lesson 6, the rest are various exercises with lots of variations to make sure people are training, not pattering their dogs.
  3. My tunnels are sooo terribly bagged in the old DVD!!! So I had to make a new one with properly bagged tunnels! 🙂

What is different is the order, the emphasis and the exercises and I also added some new topics, so the transition to Xtreme Foundations should be super smooth - this class certainly doesn't lack in providing MANY challenges. And definitely covers many topics that we'll be working on!

This class is appropriate for all levels, from total beginners from 7 months on - and also for experienced agility dogs - I promise to keep everybody challenged!!! All feedback completely individual.

Minimum equipment needed: 2 tunnels, 4 jumps and if you want to work on see-saw and weaves as well: see-saw and stick to the ground and/or channel weaves (ideally both!). + The new Foundations DVD of course.

Topics covered: play, fetching, static toys, stays, restrains, warm ups and cool downs, tight turns, sends, pushes, threadles and serpentines, come to hand, verbal discrimination, obstacle discrimination, tunnel sends, traps and turns (hard and soft turns), extension and collection, different crosses and handling, see-saw, weaves, tire, long, double and wall jump, how to choose sequences and adjust them to your dog, how to handle mistakes and more.

SAMI FOUNDATION, final video

Hi! How have you been? It’s been too hot here in Japan so we haven’t trained in the agility feild much but we are ready for the next step. I still want to enroll Lino and her now 1yr puppy, SpaRk. I trained him puppy class stuff but almost no agility training. I’ll post his video.

    SpaRk 10months part1

I have to tell you that on the next heat, probably in early December, JAKE and Lino will be mated. So she won’t be able to finish the class this time…

    Hi,
this is Camilla + Skye from puppy class.
I would really like to continue and do fundation class.
My goal is to learn the basics, the different elements as well as how to make it as easy as possible for Skye. (When I saw the graduation videos I thought that it is perhaps too advanced but when I saw your introduction I understand that this is exactly what I’m looking for).I do have a question, I am not yet member of a club. Can I manage do this course myself on the field? If neccessary do you think it is enough that I join a club for 2020? I believe it can be a challenge when snow comes.

Yes, I think this would be a geat next class for Skye and you can certainly manage it yourself as it’s designed this way -- IF you can get some jumps and a tunnel maybe? And then later on for longer sequences or if the snow stops you, you can maybe rent an indoor place? I don’t think you need to be a member to rent a place at Jan Egil or Anett for example, but I don’t know where you live, so this could be hours away of course!

Do you also cover weave training in this course? Or is that seperate?

    Hi Silvia!

I took foundations with my Aussie Ellie a few years ago but we’ve taken a long break and need to revisit foundation work. I was just wondering if we’d still join as repeaters since the class has changed so much or if we should join as participants.

    Thanks!

Yes, you’re still a repeater if doing it again with the same dog, you’ll just need the new dVD.

Hi Silvia! Toby has taken foundations 4 times. He is now working on his MACH. He does not do threadles or backsides yet because I’ve had such a long time teaching everything else. We do not see threadles and backsides on the Masters courses in my area, so I am not terribly worried about that.

What I am worried about is my handling. It could be radically improved. I am older and not very fast. Toby is big and runs very hard. I am afraid to do front crosses and blinds because I am afraid to practice them safely. But I am determined to learn how to do FC and blinds. There are many courses I can not qualify on because I can only do rear crosses or FCs when he is on a contact.

Do you think that I should take foundations again and just focus on my FC and blind cross handling? I want to do simple practices so that I can build the appropriate muscle memory for me and for Toby.

On Saturday, a long time agility judge told me that Toby was one of the very best dogs he has ever seen. He strongly encouraged me to radically improve my handling skills so that I am able to show Toby to his best ability. Right now I am often giving him poor information or late information and it is frustrating to him.

Here is one of our better runs: " rel="nofollow">https://

I am embarrassed to show you this because I am such a poor student and I am so fearful. What do you think I should do?

That was a great run!!! Toby is sure really well trained, so you could just trust him more and get ahead for crosses yes! And sure, we could just focus on that in the class, given he has all the skills you need already.

    Hi Silvia,
I’m in your puppy class currently. I hand feed my pup everyday every meal and just like you, taking the meal time as training session. He is doing well before but all the sudden he lost his interest in his kibble… he used to love his kibble so so much and he is willing to learn new thing to get to eat.
Just suddenly, he refuses to do training session and doesn’t want to take his kibble as well… even I try just give him without asking him to do something…. any suggestions?
Btw he takes treats as usual.

Hello. Currently, 9 months Bonten is in RC class, but a bit late. Is it okay to attend the Foundation to help him grow in balance? Should we focus on RC only?

Hi Silvia, may I ask you if I can join this foundation class with my new border Deep? In March he will be 6 months and half. I know that probably we cannot do all the exercise, because of his young age, but we can do what he is able to do and nothing more…but the next foundation will be when he is one year and more…so I think a little bit late…thank you

Yes, that’s o.k.! We can do a lot at that age and it should be easy to finish things up later on when he is a bit older then.
