Foundation 3

We're starting with real sequences today, you'll get a new sequence every time and we'll always be running them in parts, starting with a small part and then adding more&more obstacles, just as you can see in the video - reward where I rewarded and then start from 1 again, meaning that you'll always be doing the whole sequence only on a 4th try or so. Whole sequences will be pretty long, to get the flow, but do NOT run a whole sequence again and again - you can run little parts several times, but the whole sequence only once or twice. Always run it without the dog first and only when you really know it, try with the dog. After every try, PLAY,  give a dog a break to rehearse the next sequence on your own and only then try again.

Don't keep running the same sequence for 2 weeks!!! You can either think of another sequence on your own or keep working on multi-wraps and sends (from lesson 1 and 2). Also, don't forget to keep working on weaves and contacts, we'll get back to that later!

And Bi on the same sequence to show how things should look like on a low and then higher height:

Bi collection

1. introducing straight lines: after all the cik&cap work, it's time to introduce some straight lines and extension jumping too. Set a straight line of 2 or 3 jumps between two tunnels (or simply use one if you don't have two), start with some cik/cap to tunnel, cik/cap to tunnel, then straight over the first jump to cik/cap on a second jump back to tunnel, then two straight jumps to cik/cap on a third one, cik/cap again on a next jump etc. - just think of something, putting more and more straight jumps in between one and another cik/cap. See a video and again another example here:

Make sure the dog is jumping differently when you just run, saying your "jump/over" or "go" cue as when you say your collection cue. Take off and landing spot must be different for collection vs. extension. Put the jumps on whatever height you're currently at with cik&cap.

2. sequencing: start with cik on 1, run in for a front cross between 2 and 3, ask for cap on 2 from the landing side, RUN for cik on 5 (extension jumping on 4), another cap on 6 and finishing with cik on 8, rewarding in the direction of 9.

3. bang the see-saw game: if you did the "closing drawers and doors" trick, then you're all ready for this new game. If you don't have a see-saw, you can use a small plank with something underneath so that it moves when the dog pushes it with front legs. If you have a see-saw, either lower it almost to the ground or support it so that one end is 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) off the ground and have them push it down with front feet - you can then raise it somewhat more off the ground. Do not promote 4 feet, 2 feet is better to teach them to push. Jackpot for most powerful pushes and eventually stop rewarding the gentle touches. Reward away from the see-saw, you want a push&go (I'm not doing very good job on that in the video, I forgot to bring better treats for that - a toy would actually be even better). ONLY work on this part (step 1 and 2) for next 2 weeks (no 4 feet yet!) - I included next steps in the video just to give you an idea what's the plan 🙂

I'll be answering your comments till Friday 29th. Then I'm leaving for EO and have the camp after that, so we'll be on break till 15th August so that everybody can catch up AND you can practice cik&cap some more. We're introducing straight lines too today, but if you only started with cik&cap when the class started, you still need to do quite some work on that anyway - especially exercises 1 of lesson 1 and 2! You can also keep adding height... So, plenty of work for everybody! The second week of this lesson will be from 15-21st August, with no video commenting in between. I like those breaks as they take some pressure off and I can always see a huge progress after the break!

But… Yours “round”s are all way too late… You are saying “go” until he is in the air and then start saying “round”… That’s WAY too late! No “go” before collection jumping!!! Only use “go” for extension and for collection, say “round” right away when when he is finished with the jump before. It’s a send cue, NOT turn right now, right here as you’re using it! But hey, nice speed!

    Hi Silvia,

I know we are still in the break but we will leave for the KC festival show in about an hour. We’ll be back on monday evening but leave on wednesday again for a few days holiday. That’s why I already post the video.
Nimble helped us a bit with the motivation training. I do the sequences with Nimble first. She screems during the sequence because she can go so fast since there is no height. So yes, she is excited. Keen… She watches Nimble, full of interest but hardly any emotion. But anyway, when it ‘s her turn she seems to have fun. And so am I. It feels good!
I also started the seesaw training. Good fun too. And I see the advantages.
    Looking forward to your comments.

Cool, she does seem more focused now. Is it still happening she gets distracted while running? Nice see-saw preparation work and nice turns, not completely extended in lines yes, but that’s normal as we have just started.

      • Inge August 16, 2011 at 15:22 Log in to Reply

She does not wander off anymore. She does not seem to loose focus completely but I still see her looking out of the corner of her eyes. 😉 So the focus is not yet what I would like to see. But I do see we are making progress, that’ the most important. I call her “enthousiastic with a brake on”. If you know what I mean. Polona called her “a one faced dog”. Well, since I get to know her better and better I can see enthousiasm in her but sometimes it is more like she does not let it go. Like Jonina noticed, we are having fun and that’s probably the secret, having fun will probably loosen her up, don’t you think?
Anything I can do to improve the extension? Do more straight line work than turns??

        • LoLaBu August 16, 2011 at 22:55 Log in to Reply

Yeap, it definitely looks like you are on the right way! It’s normal she is not fully extending yet as we just started with it. Keep working on turns, but definitely throw in some straight lines too and preferably reward them by a ball, thrown in advance -- say “go go”, run and throw a ball over the last jump or two. “Go” should mean to her to run ahead fast as the ball is coming.

It’s great to see you two are having so much fun! She is so fast!!
      Have a nice holiday Inge!!

Hi Silvia & classmates, here is sequence 2. The first is my first attempt with problems. I sometimes get refusals on course and am looking forward to your comment on that. Thank you!

Refusals mean that the commitment could be better. So some more work on sends to one jump, while leaving early (before the dog is taking it), would be good. Of course, even when you master it on one jump, it will sometimes happen when running in a sequence. Don’t take him around you before sending to the jump again -- just freeze and show the jump again and wait for him to take it. He needs to see that if you send, you mean it 🙂

Also -- on 2 and 6, you are not getting any collection. All other turns are great, but for 2 and 6, your hands are so high and in sending mode that you even send him to the back side few times. I think he commits well enough to 1 and 5 that you have plenty of time to get in and do a front cross. That way, you will be able to cue collection much better. You can then try to get the same when staying back, but you need to keep hands closer, say your verbal sooner and move less to cue collection.

    Hi! This is sequence #2.
This is our 2nd or 3rd attempt, I don’t remember, but for sure this is the first time we do the whole sequence. I had permission to use our church garden, which is def much bigger than mine, so I’ll try to go and post a video of the same sequence in a bigger space.

    AF Class 5

Oh, and I didn’t forget about your question, I just kept forgetting to find out how tall she was. She’s about 52 cm now.
Have a nice week. I’m leaving next week from Aug 25 to Sept 5, so I will have to catch up after that.
    Bye,
    Laura & Shape

Wow Laura, I am impressed with how you are utilizing such a small space!

🙂 thanks Nancy! I’m trying, but it’s not always possibile to do all the assignments…

    • LoLaBu August 15, 2011 at 21:46 Log in to Reply

Cool that you found even bigger space, despite even this one should do. You can move the first jump all the way to the wall and move the tunnel further back to spread it some more at least in one direction. You could then turn it around (the tunnel against the wall) and spread it in the opposite direction to get some new challenges. No problems with the sequence, other than you don’t handle 5 quite enough and that gives you somewhat wider turn. Don’t send to 5: send to 4 and come in to handle 5, cueing it with low left hand (vs. high right hand) already to support the collection. You need to support the collection cue with body language whenever you can be close enough -- you need to do something differently when you want her to jump straight vs. collect over the jump.

Thanks for the comment, Silvia. I’ll do as you said.

    Hi Silvia,

Here is what we started before the break. Synergy already knows 2o/2o on the end of the teeter so the bang and go had a little confused. Do you think I should just do 2o/2o with her at this point?

    Thanks,
    Marla

    • LoLaBu August 15, 2011 at 20:54 Log in to Reply

Cool, her collection and understanding of it looks very good now, you can raise bars for an inch or two now. And yes, it’s somewhat hard to get just front feet when they know 2on2off already. Like you are working on now is actually pretty good: front feet first and then hind feet on.

  8. Marla August 15, 2011 at 18:17 Log in to Reply

And this is 2 days later. I have not taped anything since because I would like your input before going further (want to make sure I am doing it right:-). I think I was swinging my arm on a collection cue and I should hold it steady instead. Is this correct? Also, should I be giving more of an extension cue by running back to the tunnel?

    Thanks,
    Marla

    • LoLaBu August 15, 2011 at 21:00 Log in to Reply

Yes, you want low and steady hand for collection and running for extension.

I commented old videos real quick (otherwise I would never catch up on new ones and making a break wouldn’t make any sense), will wait for new videos 🙂

    • LoLaBu August 16, 2011 at 10:39 Log in to Reply

I prefer front feet only first as that way, they really learn to push it down. But well, he seems heavy enough that also just running till the end should be fast enough.
