Silvia Trkman's new DVD, putting a twist to her previous Running Contacts video - making the process shorter and easier on dogs' bodies and limiting the time on actual equipment to the minimum. It allows you to train anytime, anywhere and master turns, soft turns and straight exits with all possible handling after with just a mat and well before introducing dog-walk and A-frame. It
- shorts the whole process by focusing on understanding right from the start
- limits the work on equipment to the minimum by teaching it all on just a mat - meaning very little work on actual dog-walk needed
- eliminates the tossed toy phase, replacing it with just handing the toy to a dog, so it's much easier on their bodies - but still allows you to work with lots of speed well before adding a dog-walk into the picture
It covers both dog-walk and A-frame and is appropriate for total beginners, retrains and all trying to improve their running contacts.

I purchased the RC DVD. I don’t know if I’m allowed to ask a question but sometimes I have trouble with your accent and sometimes the background noise when you are giving the instruction.
I am just beginning the turns on the mat. Do you give a cue for the mat or to go to the mat?
Thanks!
I use my general mat cue for the first session or two, but then switch to my left&right cues and use that to send to a turn on the mat. So I soon use exit cues only rather than mat cue as such.
Thank you!
Hi Silvia,
Kip’s RC has been good after finishing your classes, but the last 2 months he has started to be inconsistent and losing separation and reach on the last stride so he hits high or misses. I’m sure part of this is that we weren’t able to train as much but now we are training consistently and I’m not sure how to help him. Today he looked like he was striding normally up until the last stride, and then loses separation and reach and launches off. Any thoughts on troubleshooting?
Lack of training doesn’t cause that no -- he must have hit the edge or slipped or similar to start avoiding the end… I would add a mat again, covering another 0,5m after DW as well to hide the end. Working on hard turns can help too.
Hi! We have been doing mat work for running contacts with a trainer in our area, but my dog is really struggling -- I think it is partially because the Manners Minder was scary to him, but we still had an issue when we took away the MM and used with a placed toy. So, after some research I purchased your DVD largely because of the emphasis you place on speed and extension in the beginning and use more handler movement, plus reward from the handler initially. I am hoping to take your class in July although we most likely won’t have access to anything but a full height dogwalk (and a plank, but not two planks like in the video), so I’m not sure that will work. Still, I am researching options. In the meantime, I will continue to work through the mat work in the video (going back to the very basics). I wanted to share a 14s clip of what my dog is doing to show my concerns (and to see if this is something you think we can work through). My dog is also a flyball dog and since he was young has really accelerated and run in complete extension when doing restrained recalls or any sort of chase games, so that is why I was really hopeful your approach would be best for him. Again, I wanted to keep the video really brief, but it’s almost like Happy (that’s his name) is scared of being wrong. You can see he is basically walking until he hits the back mat with his back feet and I mark it with a YES, then he extends and takes off. (I have currently taken the clicker and any sort of beeping out of the picture because he’s showing a little sound sensitivity and I don’t want to exacerbate that at all.) Honestly I am hopeful that just going back to the very basics and really building his confidence on the mat behavior will resolve this, but I am wondering if you have ever seen anything like this and think it can be worked through (or have any advice of anything that might help over the next month until the next RC class starts). I have more video with the sharp turns, and while he isn’t as slow, it’s the same general behavior that he doesn’t really accelerate or extend until he is returning to me from the mat). I am adding a quick flyball recall video just to show this is NOT typical for my dog. I don’t want to give up -- I just don’t know what is causing this. " rel="nofollow ugc">https://
Yes, this is not unusual problem when you start them with low speed at first. But the last try from a wrap was nice, so I would certainly use wrap starts + set the wrap at the bend as bends are best for this problem. Bigger mat can help too. And for hard turns, I would use his flyball turns to make them fun and keep the speed up! See you soon in class -- I’m sure we can get nice RC with Happy!
Thank you!
I don’t seem to be able to access the running contacts class and I was logged into the page.
Thank you for your help.

I fixed your access -- let me know if you are still having problems!
Hi Silvia,
I have a question: which colour of the mat would you recommend for DW? Does colour make a difference in training?
Just make sure it’s different colour than the surface you train on -- and different from DW contact. And ideally different from your dog’s paws colour so you can see the paws on it better.
Thank you!
