To’s toe saga
To started the season 2016 really, really well, coming back after puppies better as ever. But then, we started to get more&more bars again and her DW was not that good anymore either - and I also noticed she is often stiff in her front after trainings, so I took her to sports vet in mid-August. He said one of her toes is too stiff because of an old injury in metacarpophalangeal joint and that caused problems in a shoulder, so I was told to strengthen the shoulder and do lots of ROM on that toe. But after a month, I noticed the toe is just as stiff in vertical direction - but abnormally mobile in lateral direction...
So we went back - to confirm loose collateral ligament in P2 joint. She was put on rest with taping on - worked beautifully for Bi who had this injury 2 years ago. But it didn't make any difference for To. So next, the surgeon went in with the needle to make some scratches to provoke healing + injected some blood around for inflammation/healing. Still no improvement. So we went back and did a surgical repair on the ligament. The toe looked great for 3 weeks - and then the stitches gave up and we were back to zero... We think now that P2 injury is not healing because there is some rotation one joint higher that makes it impossible to heal... And metacarpophalangeal joint on 3rd digit is very hard to access by surgery... I looked in stem cell treatment option too, but again, very unlikely that could work in this case because of rotation...
So the surgeon told us to just start a rehab and see how she copes, adding activity gradually. At this point, I don't have much hope she can do much, if any, agility again, but hopefully, she can still have a normal, active life. Having her off strict rest and being able to do more of on leash walks and tricks feels sooo good after all the rest now! And to make it even better, we were told to do lots of swimming and walking in sand. We took instructions seriously and flew to Canary Islands to rehab To's toe and pay her off for being so patient for last 6 months, letting her have some fun again. - More pictures coming soon!
And yes, of course Le got to come as well - she didn't stay small enough for flying in cabin for no reason afterall!
I’m so so sorry all the treatment and strickt rest hasn’t given the resaults you were hoping for! But it warms my heart to see To finally enjoying herself and having some fun again 🙂 She sure is lucky to have a mom who takes her to the Canary Islands on a well deserved holliday 😀
Oh no! I am sorry to hear that her toe might not ever heal!!! That is sad news. I’m glad you got to go on a fun trip, though, I hope that all the swimming and sun and sand helped her. Laura
Oh no -- I’m sorry to hear the toe hasn’t healed! It’s great that you all got to enjoy the Canary Islands, though. I’m sure To is so happy to be active and busy again…….and who knows, with time her toe may find its own way to heal and surprise all the experts. 🙂
Oh no! I’m so sad to hear she isn’t feeling good! Hope she gets better as soon as possible. But I’m sure she was happy about the trip 🙂
So sorry for you and To, I wish you all the best and that she gets better as soon as possible!!!
I completely understand all that you have gone through with To. Here is to many swims and lots of runs on the beach!
Noooo! Poor To(e)!! That really sucks 🙁 Hope some virtual puppy-kisses from Torvaig will help the healing! X
I’m so sorry To isn’t healed now. I hope her toe will finally heal!! Enjoy your holidays 😉
So sorry Silvia, I know that is disappointing news. I hope To is able to quickly return to a normal, active life filled with many more cool vacations like this one. Now you have a great reason to take many trips to the beach!
