Homework!
O.k., homework for everybody this time. This is a short section from the new Tricks DVD. You need to first teach 3.b part of this trick and then please tape the start of 3.c trick and post it here - I would like to see as many different dogs as possible solving the problem of how to get a hold of a bottle on the floor. Happy training and thank you for your help.
Thanks for sharing this on your blog, I will try it out and hopefully get a vidoe up as well. Again thank you for sharing with the public!
Mary
You’re welcome, fortunately, I have enough tricks ideas that I can share π Would love to see your video!
I’m going to try and teach this one too! I’ll try to get a video this week. π
Great, have fun -- and post a video! π
I love tricks. Gonna take a look where this link lead me to later. This iPhone can’t go there.
3.b part of this trick DONE!
Now we’ll practice it a little bit more, then we will go to part 3.c and try to make a video. π
Maja
Fast as always! π Maybe you can try with a bottle and one leg too then, just interested which version is easier.
And video:
Yes, maybe we should try with a bottle. π
See ya! π
Yeah, this looks too easy for you two!
Okay, my dog got as far as batting it around with his paws-if he kicks it too far he will go get it and drop it in front of me and start with the paws again. But I have no idea how to grow it from there. He doesn’t know how to sit up-do I need to teach that first?
You can either teach sit up first and then holding a toy with both legs -- OR you can teach him to hold it in sit position with one leg. But you first need to teach the hold and then the picking up.
Here is Toxic (4 year old cattle dog x jack russel cross) doing her best to hold on to her flower. She is mixing up 3b and c but it seems to be working for her. We got it in about 3 days and 5-6 shaping sessions. Enjoy!
Bummer, I can’t see it because of the music you used… Can you swap the music, would love to see it, if nothing else, I never saw such a mix! Do they breed them on purpose?
Yes, I can and I’ll fix it so you can see it. Toxic is from an “oops litter” between a working cattle dog on a ranch and the neighbour’s jack russell, so no, she wasn’t bred on purpose. She is extremely smart and loves shaping games!
So here is Toxic’s video again but no music. I hope you can see it!
Wow, very smart! The flower makes it really hard for her to hold it with two legs, though, no matter how hard she tries π , the other object is better. With flower, you could do one leg hold, did you get any of that too? What a fun little dog!
The last hold of the video you can see she is semi holding it with her legs so I think I will click to see that more. She did it the reverse way (hold with her mouth before her paws). I can’t impose anything on Toxic otherwise she shuts down so it has to come from her. I take what she gives me and work with it but I’ll use the other toy from now on. Teaching her all those tricks has helped a lot boosting her confidence for flyball, my main dog sport. Thanks for all the great advice on your website! You are truly an inspiration!!
Yes, she is definitely doing great with the other toy and trying hard with the flower too, it’s just that it’s too small for her to get a hold of it with both legs. Shaping is great for confidence and yes, you definitely want to leave it up her to do the thinking, that’s what makes it so much fun! Great job! Thanks!
Adorable dog! Very, very cute!
Mine are still just at the wrap the paw around a pole stage, but we have only done two very short sessions. Is that stage 3a? None of them want to do it sitting, though, so I may have to work on that for a bit.
That’s a start, 3a stage yes! It doesn’t matter for this stage, but then to hold the object on their own, it is easier when they sit vs. stand. Have fun!
Heehee, session three and I decided since Spur was applying inward pressure on the pole, to just go straight to the bottle. I used a bottle in a cloth sleeve so it is easier to grasp. He got it right away!! He is already holding it independently!!! He is not picking it up and at this point I am not asking for that, but he will hold it while sitting! I’ll try to get a video tomorrow.
The MinPins are WAY too frantic and still at the grasping, pawing stage, so they have a ways to go. They work more frantically and offer a ton more behaviors, so sometimes they take longer to get things at the beginning. Spur is my little thinker and he thinks it all through carefully! π
Yeah, I know the problem… With La, the hardest part was getting her to do it with one paw only. She doesn’t understand why you would do it with one, if you can do it with two! Or why you would do things slowly when you can do it fast! Or why you would do just one thing if you can do 100? It’s sometimes a little chaotic -- but always fun to work with her!
I will be trying this! I’ll probably post a video this weekend- working on teaching 3.b now and it is going brilliantly! I guess I’m lucky he’s so good at sitting up.
Thanks so much for sharing this! It’s gotten me into the mood for trick training now- too bad I’m not very creative with ideas.
Well, you can always get the video for more ideas π Sounds good, looking forward to see the video!
Mine have already done a bit of work on the hug thing…they both have a few balance issues when in the sitting up position which hinders them slightly but I’ll see about getting some footage, especially of the part where they first try picking it up themselves to hug.
We started to do this trick also. I try to teach it to my both dogs Ronja & Mio. We started with 3a but now we already are in 3b with Ronja. I think we can put our video here soon because she is so quick learner.:) But until that we watch how others do it..;)
Here is our video: please excuse the length -- it has my two Weimaraners and I had no time to edit (plus deficient on vid editing skills anyway) π
Showing the first time I asked them to “hug” an item on the floor. Then showing their level of 3.b -- not too advanced as we only started two days ago. Interestingly -- both dogs (Evie esp) would prefer to “hug” using both legs BUT are not balanced at an upright position so I mainly clicked for one leg hug.
Thanks !!!! what FUN homework that is :-))
Another two smart dogs! VERY good for the first session! I’m just so amazed how smart dogs are, especially those who were given a chance to think and practice learning. I gave this trick as a homework in my two-parts tricks workshop (with 3 days in between to practice) and only those who knew tons of tricks already were thinking in the right direction, all other had no idea what to do. And here, everybody can do it in a couple of days! π I guess the readers of this website have extra smart dogs! I wonder why π
