Agility Foundations

100min long, includes pdf file with course maps, 50 eur/57usd for DVD, 48 eur/54usd for download

6 years after the first Foundations DVD... - here comes a new one, with all the important things I've learned in the last 6 years and all the new challenges the courses brought in last years! All new video material, many new topics, a bit different order and emphasis and tons of new challenges!!! The hardest part of this project was fitting all the info in 100min!

Foundations Revisited DVD pretty much covers it all: from getting a puppy interested in playing with you, getting them to fetch, getting interest in static toy, building rock solid stays, restrains, warm ups and cool downs, all the steps towards tight turns, sends, independent pushes, threadles and serpentines, building a great come to hand, verbal discrimination, obstacle discrimination, tunnel sends, traps and turns (hard and soft turns), extension and collection, different crosses and handling, see-saw, weaves, tire, long, double and wall jump, how to choose sequences and adjust them to your dog, how to handle mistakes and more.

It takes you through 6 lessons, from pre-obstacles work to sequences and course work. Includes a pdf file with all the maps of various exercises and sequences. Length: 100min

Is the download to keep or do we only have a certain amount of views? or is it best to order the DVD to keep?

If you teach stays you use the clicker as well? On the dvd I saw you rewarding really fast when Le lies down so she didn’t have time to get up 🙂 But you still click & reward? Not just putting treats down without clicking?
I couldn’t see a clicker or hear the sound on the dvd 😉 That’s why I ask 🙂

If I understand it well you first reward so fast in a down position the dog’s has no time to get up? And than gradually build time up? When do you introduce the ‘stay’ command?

I really want a good stay for my puppy 🙂

I don’t introduce a stay command. Sit/down cue as such means stay until a release for me. And yes, I just reward a lot at first and then slowly reduce it + add more&more distractions. You can also click for duration yes, especially after distractions if the puppy keeps the position -- so you can click&reward that.

In your foundations DVD and online program you use balls and toys for rewarding everything. Have you ever worked this stuff with a dog that doesn’t play with toys? Suggestions on how to do this using food?

Toys that can be stuffed with food are of great help as it certainly helps to be able to reward away from you… Other options are setting bowls with food and rewarding from hand when still in movement -- but having something to toss is certainly more convenient.

    Hi Silvia! 🙂

My husband completed my collection of your amazing DVDs last Christmas with Foundations Fun and FF&Fab Waeves. I absolutely LOVE them (as I do all the others!) and use your methods all the time with my students (I teach agility foundations to adult dogs).
Only, I can’t seem to be able to open the course maps PDF files in Foundations Fun (though I have no problem whatsoever with FF&Fab Waeves), could you please help me with this?
    Thx!!! 😉

    Hi Silvia,

I’m teaching my border collie Sum to exit the tunnel left or right on verbal command, from your dvd 🙂 I thought he understood it last session, so cool!! But today I found out it is more my position or bodylanguage before the tunnel which tells him to go left or right, not so much my verbal command oops…
Do your dogs really know the difference? Also when you stand on the one side, and tell them only with verbal command to exit the other side? (so no body language or crosses before the tunnel). And when can you expect or train this? Can I just keep on training and hope he will understand on only the word? He knows only verbal command with spinning left or right 🙂
Perhaps this will also be covered in foundations class august, but I wanted to ask it already here to go on with training it 😀 😉

    thanks!

I don’t bother training it to this degree -- I always help with body language as well and use left&right mainly to warn them about the turn and give them additional info on direction if they’re not quite sure. I never felt the need for more than that.

oh okay. I thought it might be handy in some courses, were it is not possible to be on the right side of the tunnel but let the dog come out the right side by verbal command. But perhaps there are handling options in such situations I don’t know of yet 😉
So you recommand to train more on handling, letting the dog know by body language and position (rear cross on tunnel) that he needs to come out the other side? (supporting with verbal command but the main info is with body language?)

Why would you want the dog to exit to the side you are not on? What then?

Once the dog knows the turns out of a straight tunnel, meaning knows to turn in a tunnel, I just put it on real courses and train it there, I don’t train it isolated anymore.

well perhaps some courses have situations like this? (one jump on the left side of the tunnel)
And on a second grade jumping course this year lots of handlers came in trouble because the dog had to exit to the left, and than take jumps, but almost no handlers was able to be there with fast dogs to guide the dogs to the left. Lots of almost bumps into the handler or dogs who turned right. Tried to draw that part of the course here.
But when I look at it now, I don’t know why no one chose to run on the left side of the tunnel and do rear cross on the jumps after the tunnel.
Well perhaps you are right, I might tought to difficult and perhaps all or almost all courses are able to walk with rear cross body language on tunnels 🙂 Perhaps I thought of a problem that doesn’t exist hahaha lol

I still don’t see how you would handle 2nd jump after the tunnel if hanging back and having them turn independently from you??? -- It’s not because of the tunnel but of what happens next that you have to be there anyway, so yes, I think you’re making up problems 🙂 -- It’s more important you can leave early on a sequence before as to be able to stay on a wrong side of a tunnel… And in 2nd situation, you are rear crossing anyway and supporting the verbal that way…

true! The handler would still get in trouble because he is to far back.. indeed.
          tnx for your answers!

Hi! The site has changed tremendously, is this just for me, or is everyone having this problem? I can hardly find my way around anymore…?

The website didn’t change at all, you probably just ended on another page that you wanted to. You are under “training videos” here. I think you wanted to click “on line classes”?

I’ve purchased your Foundation Fun DVD and am currently watching it(its splendid, by the way!) but have one constant, reoccurring question; when doing cik and cap, which is which? I mean, does the dog enter cik with right shoulder or left shoulder? And during cap does the dog enter with right shoulder or left shoulder? If you could please clear this up for me, that’d be great! Also, can you use cik and cap on either side of the jump, such as on both the right wing and the left wing? Thanks in advance!

I use cik for left wraps (left shoulder at the object) and cap for right. I use both on both wings, but if the dog has to cross the plane of the jump first and take it from a backside, I will first use my backside/push cue and then cik/cap. Hope that helps!

    Hi Silvia!

    Thanks for a great video!

I have started agility with my dog with other methods than yours but now i’d like to start to train foundations all over and concentrate especially on turns (cik/cap). As we already have scheduled training for this coming winter season, is it possible to train simultaneously this new foundations method and courses with full height bars with our other coaches? Or should I wait for a season that we have no other training and concentrate only to these foundation skills?

    Thank you for your answer!

Yes, that’s no problem since it’s not retraining, it’s just additional training of new skills -- that you won’t use on full height until it’s ready, but it’s no problem to do both separately.
