Your last homework already! Two more weeks left to catch up and then with October 3rd, this class is finished. If you want to keep working on Foundation stuff in a class form, you can join October Foundation class (that is repeat of this class) for a reduced price. If you want to take things further, you're welcome to continue in Handling class that will start 31st of October, I'll open the registration soon. In Handling class, I'll be posting two different exercises for two different levels: the whole course for more experienced teams and shorter sections that will still be focusing on training to some degree for beginners.
1. sequence
Let's check your stays. I usually train them away from agility until they are 100% with toys flying, dogs running around, me moving etc. - and then just use them here and there also in agility: probably only for about 10% of sequences we run, to make sure I'm not given too many opportunities to ruin them 🙂 In this sequence, you need a stay. Position your dog at the good angle to be on a good line for 2nd jump, go to your position and start. Choose how you want to handle it.
2. front, rear and blind crosses: as there were some questions on the crosses, I included a video with different crosses on the same sequence. Normally, I first do front crosses only (as I only do collection sequences) + blind crosses on tunnels, then add rear crosses on flat and at tunnels, then blind crosses and then rear crosses on jumps. So try rear cross on a tunnel and on flat first and if that goes well, try it on a jump: see the video - just ignore the double tunnel, use a single tunnel of course, I just used whatever I already had in a set up. If you want (I'm not forcing anybody, I'm just including those as some participants were asking about them), you can try it with blind crosses too. Normally, I will choose the cross based on a situation: for collection, I will use a front cross OR, if I can't get there in time, rear cross at the jump. For extension, I will choose blind cross OR, if I can't get there, rear cross on flat. At trials, I do the most front crosses, then blinds and maybe one rear cross every 5 runs... Yeah, not big fan. But of course, it's important the dogs know rear cross too as sometimes it is the only option!
You could of course run those sequences with front crosses only, I showed it with rear and blind crosses only as by now, I think we mastered the front crosses already, so we can try some rears and blinds (if you want).
3. send in your contacts, see-saw, weaves and multi-wraps (on your current height) work again to check how it's going and to give you some suggestions on how to proceed after the class is finished.
Hope to see you in Handling Class!
Hi,
For the last time a video of Hyper. What a shame.
Drove to my brother’s place to publish the videos, because my internet didn’t work (again!!!)
I worked 3 weeks on the treatles, but I’m still not very pleased. In a sequence it’s very difficult. But we keep working on this!
We also see you in France and wish you lots of succes!
Thanks a lot for the tips!
Cool, the serpentines are going really well, despite I would try to be closer to the jumps and more in front: it would give you even tighter line AND make threadles easier too. It’s great he has such great distance skills, but close work is important too and the threadles, he could definitely read better if you were closer to the gaps and more in front. -- Just something to try. It would help with that threadle in the sequence too: if you were closer, it would be much easier to cue 12. No problems with the rest, but he could definitely be tighter on 5 and 6 -- try to cue more collection there, 6 is definitely cik. All in all: great obstacle focus and distance skills, but still possible to gain time on close work and tightness. Happy training, thanks for the good wishes and see you soon!
Since the class is winding to a close just wanted to say a huge thank you for offering this class and Emily & I had a blast with it. Although we did not get real far with the jumping drills we did: Go from no weaves at all to a set of 12 straight poles that she can hit almost any entry of and stay in despite me throwing balls thru the poles in front of her, falling on the ground, etc. She also went from never having seen a teeter and being a very sound sensitive worry wart to a dog who happily does a full height teeter. Great tunnel sends, and I know the reason we didn’t get as far as we could of with the jumping is because I made some choices and put other things above our agility training such as: Emily & I climbed 5 mountain summits this summer, we also hiked approx 50 miles a week all summer long, we camped a lot & swam a lot! I knew it would be a challenge to keep up with our lifestyle but I am glad I tried. So now that our rainy season is here, the forests are filled with hunters and we have a couple months before we have enough snow for snowshoeing I’ll have the time to devote to getting her jump handling training down.
I am still trying to decide about handling class vs repeating this class, to waiting and doing a class in the spring. I know we need to get more of the foundation down before handling, but I also kind of think I can do that without the class since you gave me a clear idea of what I should be doing. I also know that I like the focus of a class to keep me on track. I also like to play more than work so I do have to watch what I spend a little bit:)
So anyway, incase I hold off on another class, I have loved the two classes Emily & I have done and we have gotten so much out of them! I hope to someday make the trek that a way to meet you and hike in your neck of the woods!
Very cool, that’s actually A LOT of things done in just 3 months! It was great meeting you and Emily, hope to see you again in another class -- or on the hike! 🙂
Hi Silvia,
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all that Charm and I have learned from you during our Puppy and Foundations classes. While auditing foundations, we have been doing all the sequences and Charm is doing great! I am so proud of her serps and I was amazed to see how well she did on the sequences in Lesson 6. I’m so excited that she can serp and do 180s, 270s and the back side of a jump. We are continuing in Running Contacts. Thanks again for everything!
Nancy Latthitham
So great to hear that Charm is doing so well! She sure is a smart little dog! How are the running contacts going now?
Hi Silvia and classmates -- I too hate that the class is coming to an end. It has been so fun and challenging and Paddy and I have benefited so much. I don’t have time to post my videos on the progress we have made with serps and threadles but we have been working and we have improved. I am taking the class again so maybe the next time I will not find posting the videos such a time-consuming chore. One thing I have realized is that it is extremely helpful to video practice sessions. I learned so much about the things I was doing wrong by watching my videos. Anyway, we can now do three threadles in a row and two “arounds.” Stlll working on getting three of those consistently. Thank you again Silvia for a great class and wishing all of my classmates much success in their endeavors. I certainly saw some great dogs and handlers and learned from their videos and Silvia’s insightful comments.
Wow, three threadles and two arounds is already GREAT for such a young dog! You won’t be seeing those in novice level 🙂 but it’s good to be prepared for everything -- you will be more than ready! Looking forward to see more of Paddy in the next class, you are such a great team! But I agree, those videos are very informative, but very time consuming, it takes me ages before I get to editing mine…
Hi!
I’m also sad that the class is finishing also we didn’t train so much the last month becouse of some injuries 🙁
I’m really interessed how to proceed with the seesaw once the dog have good stepping on the end? I miss the instruction somewhere?
Thanks!
Masha
Yeap, check the original see-saw video I posted, I showed all the steps with Bu. Jumping on with all 4, from the side, is your next step. I hope Wey is back to agility soon!
Hi there Silvia, I have been thinking and maybe it is something you could think about please. For those of us that are behind but will still carry on with the lessons, but will do it slowly, is there any way you could have a ‘open’ on line class that allows us to post videos from time to time but it may be lessons from any of the classes we have taken. In other words for those that have done any of the already online classes. If i start again with AF it meens reading all comments from the new class and i have not yet managed to catch up with the 1st but will do now that class is finished. There is so much to learn from the class mates from this class so i can follow that and still do the lessons and you could give us comment. It could even be for those of us when we finish RC and we may not quite at the end of the class be finished. Not sure if i am making sense but maybe it is something that could help some of us. Great.
Well, taking the class again, for half of a price, a kind of has this function… But will think about it and see if I can come up with another idea. For a quick question on RC/foundations, you can also of course always post to public pages on RC and “our training”.
Thank you so much, that sounds like a plan for now. My Spy is coming back to life ( we are almost finished our 12 weeks, which it has been each session!) maybe it is the RC that we have started again too, so i will try going back to the lessons amd hopefully make some progress again!
First my internet goes out and now youtube is doing maintenance! I just want to post my last video!
Teeter! Plus We went back to figure 8s for the last lesson.
We had a lesson yesterday and Tibby was able to figure out that my instructor’s teeter is the same as mine. She got right up on it and offered her end behavior. She was a little nervous when it got up to 5 inches, so we stopped at that. She also ran all the way up it a few times -- then she was as tall as me!
Thanks for the great class! We have learned SO much and had a TON of fun! There were some times when I wanted to give up, but I’m glad we stuck with it. See you in the next Foundations class! 🙂
Catalina -- the progress you have made with Tibby is amazing! You are wonderful to have stuck with it and given her so much confidence. Looking forward to seeing her blossom even more in next Foundations class.
Anita and Paddy
Thank you SO MUCH! You have no idea how much I appreciate the encouragement 😀
See you in the next class!
See you! 🙂 The best is to then post a video there as this class is now finished…
For the people who like to know how Silvia’s is doing at the WC (and don’t know yet): Jumping Large with Bu 7th place!!!!! 😀
Thank you, Jonina. Keep us posted, please.
Anita
Silvia and La! For now nr 1!! 😀
Yeah--I missed the runs on the live feed, but I’m sure they were amazing. Can’t decide if I’ll watch some more or go practice cik/cap!
Woo Hoo!! So proud of Silvia, La & Bu! 😉
Yay Silvia, La and Bu! What a great way to start the competition.
Does anyone know of anyone with videos? I subscribed to the one year video on demand, but that does not start until mid October 🙁 There was no point in getting the lvie feed, as it is in the middle of the night here.)
hi, you can watch the competition for 15E, the url is http://www.agilityworldchampioshiplievin2011.tv. The image is HD, very good
Yes but I think it is only ‘live’ so I am sleeping when it is ‘on’ 🙁 It’s 21:15 here right now.
Someone shared this in the Oct. Foundations class
She is SO FAST!!! Awesome run!
Thanks so much for posting this. She makes it look so easy. More practice now…
