Foundations 6

Your last homework already! Two more weeks left to catch up and then with October 3rd, this class is finished. If you want to keep working on Foundation stuff in a class form, you can join October Foundation class (that is repeat of this class) for a reduced price. If you want to take things further, you're welcome to continue in Handling class that will start 31st of October, I'll open the registration soon. In Handling class, I'll be posting two different exercises for two different levels: the whole course for more experienced teams and shorter sections that will still be focusing on training to some degree for beginners.

1. sequence

Let's check your stays. I usually train them away from agility until they are 100% with toys flying, dogs running around, me moving etc. - and then just use them here and there also in agility: probably only for about 10% of sequences we run, to make sure I'm not given too many opportunities to ruin them 🙂 In this sequence, you need a stay. Position your dog at the good angle to be on a good line for 2nd jump, go to your position and start. Choose how you want to handle it.

2. front, rear and blind crosses: as there were some questions on the crosses, I included a video with different crosses on the same sequence. Normally, I first do front crosses only (as I only do collection sequences) + blind crosses on tunnels, then add rear crosses on flat and at tunnels, then blind crosses and then rear crosses on jumps. So try rear cross on a tunnel and on flat first and if that goes well, try it on a jump: see the video - just ignore the double tunnel, use a single tunnel of course, I just used whatever I already had in a set up. If you want (I'm not forcing anybody, I'm just including those as some participants were asking about them), you can try it with blind crosses too. Normally, I will choose the cross based on a situation: for collection, I will use a front cross OR, if I can't get there in time, rear cross at the jump. For extension, I will choose blind cross OR, if I can't get there, rear cross on flat. At trials, I do the most front crosses, then blinds and maybe one rear cross every 5 runs... Yeah, not big fan. But of course, it's important the dogs know rear cross too as sometimes it is the only option!

You could of course run those sequences with front crosses only, I showed it with rear and blind crosses only as by now, I think we mastered the front crosses already, so we can try some rears and blinds (if you want).

Sequence 6

3. send in your contacts, see-saw, weaves and multi-wraps (on your current height) work again to check how it's going and to give you some suggestions on how to proceed after the class is finished.

Hope to see you in Handling Class!

    Hi Silvia & Classmates,

Oh My…I can’t believe this class is over! 🙁 Elsa & I have had so much fun & even though we haven’t finished all the lessons, we’ve learned a ton! Thank you!!!

One of the reasons we’re so far behind is that we have a new member of the household--a 10 week old BC (Zephyr). I had forgotten how much time is involved in raising a puppy--good thing it’s so much fun! I’ve signed up for another Puppy Class for Zephyr & will do “More Tricks” with Elsa in November so I hope to see some of you there!

Silvia, will this first AF class stay online for awhile longer so I can work on the lessons? I was tempted to sign up for a repeat AF but I probably won’t have enough time with the 2 trick classes & now the days are so short--not much daylight to work outside. 🙁 I’m hoping you’ll offer AF again in the spring & I can work both dogs in that class. I just LOVE your classes! THANK YOU!!!

PS…Here’s a video of Zephyr working on his “shore legs” 🙂

Thanks, Birgit! Yeah, Elsa loves her new brother & they have a lot of fun playing together. 🙂
Are you & Fine going to be doing the More Tricks class? I hope so!!!

Yes, I think we`ll doing the More Tricks class. I hoped you would do the Handling Class too. Do you think it`s too much? Or is it because of the equipment you need for it (I think I remember that you aren`t member in a club ). I like your style to handle Elsa and I therefore liked your videos so much.

Great--I look forward to seeing you in the More Tricks class! Yeah, I think the handling class would be way beyond where Elsa & I are right now. 🙂 Plus, I don’t have any of the equipment beyond jumps, weave poles & tunnel. I think my winter project will be trying to build a seesaw & maybe a dog walk…or maybe making more money so I can but one. 🙂 I’ve tried to get more people interested in agility out here on the island so we could share equipment but so far no luck. 🙁
PS…Yesterday I took Elsa down to the field to work on the lesson 5 sequence & she did GREAT! We hadn’t done anything but one jump stuff in 3 weeks but she remembered everything & was even better than when we left off. So exciting!!! I can see why people get addicted to agility! 🙂

Kathy, I´m looking forward to see you and Elsa in More Tricks class!!! So nice to hear that Elsa did the sequence well. And -- there will be a handling class every year, I think. So next year, next chance to do it together. I`m getting more and more afraid of the winter too, but there are always some days without rain or snow -- and then Fine and me are on the field.

Very cool to meet Zephyr! So nice to see Elsa likes him so much, they’re too cute! And yes, sure, there will be another Foundation class and this one is staying on line for a while too 🙂

Oh good! Looking forward to another AF & so glad this one will be available to read & look at videos. There’s so much great info here! Thanks!

Quick question--what happened to everyone’s photos off to the right? Maybe it’s my computer but all the photos are gone & it says the person’s name & avatar inside a white square. Anyone else not seeing the photos?

Just a few lines to update our progress.
Computer problems recently and very busy with work and training, no videos to send.
Arrow is doing great with the Teeter at about 3/4 height and drops, clicks, quick releases. OK he does not do so well with waiting to be released. Work in progress!
Weaves at 7″ wide and trouble with entries from the right side over 45 degrees angle. Work in progress!
We are working on 2 jump threadles and push outs and still at angled serps.
8″ jumps and plan to go to 10″ this coming week. Working tight wraps and doing great on multi wraps but then with any speed such as figure eights he gets a bit wide.
Have started RC class and with a tunnel to start and 12′ double board on a table at 8″ and thrown ball as he exits the tunnel we are getting 3 hits with all full running rear leg separation. If I add a tunnel after then he stretches out and misses hit #3.
    Work in Progress!
Loving the courses from lessons 5 and 6 and have been setting them up to work on parts.
Thanks for a great learning experience.
I learned much about Agility but also how great a tool to video practice
sessions. I learned a lot from videos I made of my practices sessions that I did not post.

I am going to miss Agility Foundations!!!
Thank You also to those students who sent all those videos, I am aware of how much work went into doing those, and some were really cool productions.

    Hi everyone,
Thought I will squeeze in my final video for this class if it is not too late already! I have not been as active a participant as I should have been due to life/work demands the past few months but I hope to mend my ways when I rejoin!
Anyway, we had lots of fun and here’s our sequence on rear crosses. This is the first session I ever tried rear crosses with Harley so i am pretty happy with it even though he missed the rear cross on the jump. How can i train that?

      PS,
Since the video I broke the sequence down & trained the last rear cross on the jump with cik/cap! So I am happy now!!

Cool, no problem with easier rear crosses, but that last one was really hard. I think you need to pull him in a little bit more and then cross behind him before he takes the jump, doing a rear cross on the flat actually. For the rear cross at the jump, It’s better to try it within the first sequence first.

Thanks Silvia and everyone for watching our infrequent videos! I really enjoyed the class and watching all the videos. You guys are all amazing trainers! Like a number of others, I needed 3 weeks to do the sequences. We will be revisiting & polishing our performance on all the exercises in the next few weeks and also catching up on our RC sessions. Hope to see everyone again sometime either at RC (I am pretty certain that i will be doing “remedial” RC classes!!) and/or handling/foundation. Would really like an “Advanced” foundation…….
        Enjoy your training!

    HI!
here is our last contribution for this class.
It was a funny lesson because Doucette wanted so much to go in this tunnel entry!
this evening i will try to say ‘gauche’ instead ‘tic’ to make her turn because i’m not sure ‘tic’ is adapted. and perhaps my shoulders were not at the right place…

and you will discover that Doucette wanted to knock me out 🙂

Some problems with “come” I see 🙂 -- but cik sure made a difference! The rear cross, try to do sooner, so that she changes her lead legs before she takes off and lands more towards the left. I would also do a second blind cross somewhat sooner and more in movement, so that you’re not in her line. But again, great speed and attitude, I hope it transfers to trials too soon!

    Hi 🙂

Here is our final video of this class. We have only been working on the small sections (rear cross) and contacts -- but plenty of work ahead of us.

Furthermore I’d like to thank all of you for your great comments and videos in this class. We have learned so much -- perhaps we will join another class in the future, but for now we’ll work with what we got from this class (and there is plenty as well.

I can’t understand that this class already is over. It has gone to fast. I think it is a good idea if you let the lessons be in 3 weeks for the next courses.

I think we has a lot from this class, to work on, so we are not going into the handling class. We will focus on the running contact on the dogwalk now, and start teaching the weaves. Then maybe the handlingclass next time. Or april course at LoLaBuLand 🙂

See you at World championships 🙂

    Hi Silvia:
Here is our Lesson #6 -- sequence and rear crosses:

    Foundation Lesson 6A-1/1

    Foundation Lesson 6B-1/1

I didn’t try any blind crosses yet!
I didn’t have time to video the weaves or the teeter. On the weaves, Bender is on 12 poles now but not quite straight since we are working on getting his single step stride. I am very pleased with all his entry work.
On the teeter, we are almost at full height but I am still working on Bender driving to the end instead of slowing down at the tip point. When he is running fast he does drive to the end so I know it will come. We are also continuing with the bang game coming from the middle of the board.
And on contacts, DW you know well and one of these days I will try Bender on the Frame!

Thank you so much for this class! Like my classmates I can’t believe it is over. I agree with Gitte and would have preferred to have 3 weeks per lesson, especially for Lessons #4, 5 and 6. We have learned so much and now have lots of drills to work on over the winter. We will not be continuing with the Handling class. I would like Bender to be competent on all the equipment first before signing up. And as Teresa pointed out winter and snow arrive here in November and training will have to move indoors to rented facilities. So hopefully in the spring we will be ready 🙂

Best of luck at World Championships. Bender will be cheering for his Aunt Bu!!!!!

Cool! You two sure look ready! No problems with rear crosses and great job with the sequence. 6 could be tighter though, why don’t you use cik there? You could also set him under even more extreme angle to 1 to get even tighter line to 2. The rest all looks really smooth and clean, great job! Thanks for the good wishes, we’ll see what Bu will think about the hall and microchip check, it really freaked her out last year…

      • Shona October 4, 2011 at 04:15 Log in to Reply

Thanks so much for your feedback Silvia. Yes now I see that I need to use cik on #6 to get a tighter turn -- same as using cap on #4 in Lesson #5. Not sure why I didn’t see that when I was running! And now that I know Bender can handle extreme angles when jumping I will start searching out those serp lines for him! We just started rear crosses and so pleased they are going well. Do you use rights and lefts on your rear crosses or just rely on your motion? I am used to front crosses more with my dogs. Also trying to figure out where to use blind crosses.
I’m so happy you think we are ready for the Handling Class 🙂 I would have liked to have taken it but too difficult to practice in the winter here. It will be challenging enough to get my practice time in for the running contacts…
Let’s hope Bu can better handle the pre-agility stuff at Worlds.

Yes, I use left&right together with motion for rear crosses, I think verbals make them really easy -- for me, rear crosses are the easiest, but I definitely prefer fronts and blinds. We’ll talk more about what to use where in handling class, in real course situations, so I hope you join us in spring, it’s always fun to see Bender!

    Hi there Silvia and classmates,

Unfortunately, lately I missed a lot of this class 🙁 We have come to lesson 5.
I really don’t know what to do, I think we CAN not join the next Foundation class because here in the Netherlands it will be winter the upcoming months. :'(

Am I right Silvia that, if we will join the next Foundation class we must have to wait till lesson 5 and 6 to post video’s (questions) of lesson 5 and 6?

(Last year we had snow in November already!) So we can’t also join the Handling Class. That class looks like so much fun!!! :'(
( Don’t know if you think we would be ready for that class anyway, but still ) 🙁 🙁 🙁
Really don’t know what to do… I hope I will catch up by watching all the video’s there were post lately till it gets winter.
I still want to do another class after this one… so I think we will join the next Trick Class (If we will catch up with the RC class 😉 )

Here ar some latest video’s: (Hope I am not to late to post it, if I am, ofcourse you will not comment!)

Dogwalk and Seesaw (I really hope once we can do the running contact, that will look so much nicer 😉 )

Weaves: (she was getting tired because we did other things, so not may weaves)

    Multiwraps:

    Multi-wraps

And here we are with ” out ” Very difficult! Because when I run (to be on time on the landing side for show the next jump when there will be a next jump) she wants to walk by the jump.

Thank you so much for this GREAT class!!! I can’t describe how much I learned!!!!! A whole other way how to teach your dog agility!

Great job, keep up the good work! Outs sure take lots of commitment when you start running more, but I’m sure she will soon get it that it means go out AND take the jump, even with you moving. You can help some with you hand: raise it for out and then lower it and pull it back some for pulling her in over the jump -- you can also have a toy in it first to get more attention on your hand.

And well, you can actually post videos of lessons 5 and 6 any time to next foundation class. We’ll make their lessons every 3 weeks, so you should have enough time even when weather is not perfect all the time. That way or another: happy training and looking forward to see more of Jin in RC and maybe some other classes!

Hi there Silvia and class mates, Great job to those of you who managed to keep up, as for us wow we are so far behind so will carry on slowly and with RC class and as some have said do handling class early next year. i think we have so much to work on and to catch up with, and reading and watching videos that this will keep us still very busy but posible as there wont be any new comments coming in. please Silvia can this stay availiable for us to keep looking at?
Thank you Silvia for having this class i can see with what i have manged to teach this is just such a awesome way to teach agilty as Jonina said above. 🙂

    Hi Silvia, Classmates,

What a shame that the class is already over. Keen and I had some great fun!
It went a bit to fast for us but I’ll take the info and exercises with me and keep on working on cik’s and cap’s, serpentine’s, push throughs, pull throughs, seesaw…
Keen is really changing now. She can focus longer, is getting more and more crazy about her ball, she is picking up speed. It’s maybe not that clear in the video but I feel it and she showed it many times already (when there was no camera around ;-)).
I did not get to the sequences of lesson 5 and 6 so there is only a part of lesson 4 in the video and some other cik and cap tries. Some basic 2on2off work, multiwraps (still not that fast), the seesaw, waits and the two last tries of our RC session from a few hours again.
How long can we access this data? I hope we can come back to have a look once in a while…
Silvia, thanks again and see you in France!!
